Warmest Beach/Less Wind

My wife and I are headed to the cape at the end of May (staying in Yarmouth) and we want to get in some beach time. Being that May is not really Summer - Where would we find the warmest beaches w the least amount of wind?

At the end of May, Cape Cod can still be a bit chilly, but there are definitely spots where you can find some warmer beaches with relatively less wind. Cape Cod is known for its variety of beach conditions, so here's where you might want to consider heading:

  • Yarmouth Beaches: Since you’ll be staying in Yarmouth, you’re already in a good spot! Yarmouth has a few nice beaches, and some areas on the south-facing side of the Cape (like Seagull Beach) tend to be warmer with less wind due to their sheltered location. These beaches face Nantucket Sound, which tends to have calmer waters compared to the Atlantic side.
  • Osterville Beach: A little further down the Cape, Osterville Beach is on the south side of the Cape as well and offers calm waters. The area is often sheltered from the strong winds, making it one of the more relaxing spots. This beach also gets a bit warmer earlier in the season compared to those on the outer Cape.
  • Craigville Beach (Barnstable): Another great beach on the south side of the Cape, Craigville is known for being relatively calm, especially compared to the more exposed beaches on the outer Cape. Its location facing Nantucket Sound makes it a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming in warmer months, and it should be warm enough by late May for a good beach day.
  • Sandy Neck Beach (Barnstable): While not as sheltered as Craigville, Sandy Neck is still a great option, particularly if you prefer a mix of beach and nature. It can get windy, but the beach stretches for miles, so you can usually find a spot that feels more sheltered. Early in the season, the water may still be chilly, but the beach itself can be a peaceful escape.

Tips for Less Wind: The outer Cape (like Provincetown, Wellfleet, and Truro) tends to be windier because it's more exposed to the Atlantic Ocean. For less wind, try focusing on the southern beaches of Cape Cod, especially around Yarmouth, Barnstable, and Osterville. The waters of Nantucket Sound also tend to be calmer compared to the Atlantic side.

If you’re looking to enjoy some sun, warmth, and relatively calm conditions, the southern and more sheltered beaches will be your best bet in late May.
