Surf Fishing Question

We're travelling here for the first time ever in late January. Hubby would like to know what surf fishing is like this time of year. Any info and tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Surf fishing in Panama City Beach in late January can be a rewarding experience, though it does come with some seasonal considerations. The Gulf waters are colder in winter, which affects both the type of fish available and their feeding patterns.

Here’s what you can generally expect for surf fishing during this time of year:

  • Fish species: Winter months bring species like whiting, pompano (sometimes), sheepshead, redfish, and occasional flounder closer to the shore. Larger species such as tarpon and snook are less common in colder months.
  • Weather and water conditions: Expect cooler air and water temperatures—air typically in the 50s–60s °F, water around the mid-50s °F. This can make fishing less comfortable if you’re not dressed warmly and requires heavier clothing and gloves for handling tackle.
  • Bait and tackle: Natural baits like sand fleas, shrimp, or cut bait tend to work best in winter. Small jigs or spoons can also be effective for whiting and sheepshead. Use heavier tackle to handle stronger currents and waves typical of winter.
  • Timing: Early mornings and late afternoons are often the most productive, as fish feed during cooler periods and tides. Check local tide charts, as high tide close to sunrise or sunset generally yields better results.
  • Regulations: Ensure you have a valid Florida saltwater fishing license. Some species have seasonal restrictions or bag limits, so familiarize yourself with Florida Fish and Wildlife rules.

Additional tips to enhance your experience:

  • Bring a comfortable sand chair or a small beach cart to transport gear along the beach.
  • Layer clothing to stay warm, and consider water-resistant boots if wading in colder water.
  • Check local surf conditions each day; strong surf or storms can affect both safety and success.
  • Local bait and tackle shops can provide current reports and hot spots—these can be invaluable for first-time visitors.

Overall, while winter surf fishing is quieter than spring and summer, it can still be productive and enjoyable, especially for targeting whiting, sheepshead, and other winter-resilient species. Just come prepared for cooler weather and adjust tactics accordingly.
