Christmas Day dining

Hi All, my partner and I are travelling to Chicago for the Christmas period, just wondered if there are restaurants open over Christmas eve and Christmas day? We are staying at the Hoxton hotel, ideally looking for some higher end restaurants, not too bothered on the type of cuisine. Generally are places open or is it complete shutdown? Many thanks

Chicago has a range of dining options over the Christmas period, though many restaurants do close or have limited hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Fortunately, there are several higher-end restaurants that remain open, especially in the downtown area, near your stay at The Hoxton. Below is a breakdown of what to expect for dining in Chicago during this time, as well as some restaurant recommendations:

General Tips for Christmas Dining in Chicago:

  • Christmas Eve: Many restaurants are open on Christmas Eve, though they often close earlier than usual, around 6-8 PM. It’s a popular night for holiday dinners, so reservations are highly recommended.
  • Christmas Day: Christmas Day tends to be more limited in terms of dining options. Most fine dining restaurants will be closed, but some hotels and a few upscale eateries offer special holiday menus or brunches. It’s always best to book well in advance for these days.
  • Hotel Restaurants: Since you’re staying at The Hoxton, you might find that hotel restaurants or bars are open on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Many high-end hotels in Chicago offer special holiday meals for guests, even if other local spots are closed.

Alternative Options for Christmas Day:

  • Hotel Restaurants: Many Chicago hotels will have Christmas Day brunch or dinner options, even if the city’s restaurants are closed. Hotels like The Peninsula, The Langham, and the Waldorf Astoria often host special holiday meals. Since you’re staying at The Hoxton, it’s worth asking if their restaurant or bar will be serving a special menu on Christmas Day.
  • Asian Cuisine: Some high-end Asian restaurants, like Shaw’s Crab House or China Doll, may remain open with holiday menus. They’re often a great option for something different if you want a festive yet non-traditional Christmas meal.

Conclusion: While many of Chicago’s fine dining options close on Christmas Day, there are still plenty of great restaurants that will be open on Christmas Eve and offering special holiday meals. For Christmas Day itself, consider hotel restaurants, upscale steakhouses, or places offering brunches or holiday menus. Given that you're staying at The Hoxton, checking with them directly for any on-site holiday dining options is a good idea, as many hotels will have events for their guests. Be sure to make reservations as early as possible to ensure a spot!
