Avon in October

Hi all,

Husband and I are coming to Avon from the 9 th to the 12…any tips on dining or things to do? We are in our 60s but in pretty good shape…

We are from eastern SD if u have any ideas for a good route that bypasses Denver would love to hear your advice!

Ty folks!

FYI -staying at the Sheraton west villas. Using up some points!

Avon in October offers a quieter, scenic mountain experience with beautiful fall colors, mild crowds, and crisp autumn weather. Staying at the Sheraton West Villas puts you close to Beaver Creek and Vail, making it convenient for exploring local dining, outdoor activities, and scenic drives.

For dining in Avon and nearby areas:

  • The Little Diner: Classic American breakfast and brunch with hearty portions and friendly service. Great for starting your day before exploring.
  • Blue Plate: Casual, eclectic menu with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Offers vegetarian options and a cozy atmosphere.
  • Il Poggio: Upscale Italian dining in nearby Beaver Creek Village. Excellent for a romantic dinner or special night out.
  • Char: Located in Beaver Creek, known for steak, seafood, and craft cocktails. Perfect for a nice evening meal with views.
  • Beano’s Cabin: For a unique dining experience, this historic mountain cabin serves refined American cuisine with panoramic views. Check opening dates as it sometimes closes in early fall.

Things to do in and around Avon in mid-October:

  • Scenic Drives: The drive up Vail Pass or through Beaver Creek and Minturn provides stunning fall foliage and mountain vistas.
  • Beaver Creek Village: Walk the charming pedestrian village, enjoy art galleries, and take in the mountain scenery.
  • Hiking & Walks: Gentle trails like Nottingham Lake Loop or EagleVail Open Space offer easy hiking with beautiful scenery.
  • Gondola Rides: Take the Beaver Creek or Vail gondolas for panoramic views of the Rockies and fall colors. Even non-skiers can enjoy the ride.
  • Relaxation: Enjoy your hotel amenities or nearby spa options for a restful afternoon.

Regarding your drive from eastern South Dakota while bypassing Denver:

  • Consider taking I-76 W from Nebraska into Colorado, connecting to I-70 W near the town of Limon to avoid downtown Denver traffic.
  • Another option is using US-285 S from the Denver area if you prefer scenic backroads through the foothills before joining I-70 W toward Avon.
  • Both routes offer less congestion than traveling directly through Denver and provide a chance to enjoy Colorado’s open landscapes and foothills.

Overall, Avon and Beaver Creek in October are ideal for a relaxed, scenic, and active mountain getaway with plenty of dining options, easy hikes, and beautiful fall scenery. Planning your drives to avoid peak traffic will make the trip even more enjoyable.
