LA Public transport - is it safe?
Hi! I will be traveling to LA in late June, I’m traveling solo (female).
Is the LA metro SAFE? I won’t be using it late at night, of course, but during the day, is it safe? Or will I have to rely on Lyft/Uber?
Thanks for your advice !
The Los Angeles Metro system, which includes buses and rail lines, can be used safely by solo travelers during daytime hours, but it does require some awareness and planning. LA is a sprawling city, so public transport usage varies widely depending on the area and time of day.
Daytime Safety:
- During the day, most metro lines, especially the Red, Purple, Expo, and Gold lines, are generally safe and well-patrolled.
- Stations in busy, well-populated areas like downtown LA, Hollywood, Koreatown, and Santa Monica tend to be more secure and have visible security personnel or cameras.
- Keep an eye on your belongings, as petty theft like pickpocketing can occur, especially on crowded buses or trains.
Precautions:
- Stay in the main areas of the car and avoid isolated sections of the train if it’s lightly crowded.
- Keep your phone and valuables out of sight and carry a cross-body bag or backpack worn in front.
- Check the Metro trip planner for crowded stations or transfer points to avoid empty platforms or cars.
- Ask station attendants or locals for advice on which exits are safest and most convenient.
Alternatives and Tips:
- If you’re going short distances or prefer more comfort and flexibility, rideshares like Lyft or Uber are widely available in LA and relatively affordable during the day.
- Combine Metro use with rideshare for early or late segments, or for areas where metro coverage is sparse.
- Consider using the official LA Metro app to track real-time arrivals and updates for safety and convenience.
In summary, daytime travel on the LA Metro is generally safe for solo female travelers, especially in busy areas and on popular lines. Using common sense, staying aware of surroundings, and keeping belongings secure should allow you to use public transport without major issues. Rideshares are a convenient alternative if you prefer extra comfort or flexibility.
