Melvins Steak House

Has Melvins ever been on the boardwalk, maybe early 80's?

Good question. I couldn’t find any reliable evidence that was ever located directly on the boardwalk in Ocean City. Rather, the sources that document its history suggest a different location.

Here’s what I found — and what remains uncertain:

  • According to the list of past and present Ocean City-area restaurants, Melvin’s (sometimes called “Melvin’s Olde Towne Steak House”) was located at 1st Street & Philadelphia Avenue, not on the boardwalk.
  • A thread on a local forum (and echoed on Reddit) from multiple longtime Ocean City visitors claims: “It was never on the Boardwalk. They were located 25 N Philadelphia Avenue at 1st Street.”
  • When the building that hosted Melvin’s was later repurposed (in 2013) by a venue called , newspapers described the property as “the former Melvin’s Steak House” at First Street and Philadelphia Avenue — again not on the boardwalk.
  • Combined, these sources suggest Melvin’s was “downtown / bayside / inlet-adjacent” rather than on the tourist-heavy boardwalk corridor that runs roughly 2nd–27th Streets along the beach.

That said, there *is* uncertainty around what people remember. Some forum participants describe seeing what they believed to be a “steakhouse” on or near the boardwalk — sometimes recalling a walk-up cowboy cutout and references to a shop called “The Courtesy Shop.” But even in that discussion, other locals respond that though that steakhouse exists (or existed), it was not Melvin’s.

In summary: While memories vary, all documented historical records and credible local-history sources place Melvins Steak House at 1st Street & Philadelphia Avenue — not on the Ocean City boardwalk. So it’s very unlikely that Melvins was ever a boardwalk-front business. It seems what some people remember as “a steakhouse on the boardwalk” was likely a different restaurant entirely.
