McDowell Preserve or Pinnacle Peak hike?

We may only have time to visit McDowell Preserve or Pinnacle Peak for a scenic hike. Nothing strenuous. We will be staying in Scottsdale. Any suggestions on which to choose?

Both McDowell Sonoran Preserve and Pinnacle Peak offer scenic desert hikes near Scottsdale, but they cater to slightly different experiences. Since you’re looking for something not strenuous, here’s a breakdown to help you decide.

McDowell Sonoran Preserve:

  • Vast network of trails, ranging from easy to moderate. The Gateway Loop Trail is a popular choice for a scenic, relatively gentle hike.
  • More open desert views with diverse terrain—saguaro cacti, rock formations, and desert wildlife.
  • Less elevation gain on the easier trails, which makes it suitable for a relaxing hike without strenuous climbing.
  • Offers a feeling of “getting away” despite being close to Scottsdale, with wide trails and fewer crowded viewpoints compared to Pinnacle Peak.

Pinnacle Peak:

  • More defined trail with moderate elevation gain (about 1,300 feet round trip) but still considered accessible for most hikers.
  • Excellent panoramic views from the top, especially of the surrounding desert and Scottsdale area.
  • Well-maintained and marked trail, popular with locals, so it can be busier on weekends.
  • Trail can be a bit rocky in sections, but it’s shorter than many McDowell Preserve loops, so it’s a quicker option.

Recommendation: If your main priority is a short, gentle hike with expansive desert scenery and minimal climbing, McDowell Preserve’s easier trails like Gateway Loop or Marcus Landslide Loop are ideal. If you’re up for a bit more elevation and want a classic view of Pinnacle Peak itself and the surrounding area, the Pinnacle Peak Trail offers a rewarding experience in less time.

Both are convenient from Scottsdale, so travel distance won’t be a deciding factor. You could also combine a short McDowell walk with a quick scenic drive nearby if time allows.
