Which area of Portland to stay?
Hi,
We're doing a 2 week trip to Maine in September, and spending our last 3 nights in Portland before flying out. I'm just not sure what part of Portland I should be looking at to stay. We'd like to be walking distance of some bars, restaurants and shops. We have an early morning flight out, so need to be able to get to the airport as well.
Any suggestions are appreciated
Sandi
For a great experience in Portland, Maine, where you can walk to bars, restaurants, and shops while still being close to the airport, there are a few areas you should consider staying in:
- Old Port - This is the historic heart of Portland, known for its cobblestone streets, vibrant nightlife, and a wide variety of restaurants, cafes, and boutiques. It’s a very walkable area, so you’ll be able to explore easily. Old Port has a charming, rustic feel with a mix of modern spots, making it ideal for those who enjoy good food and a lively atmosphere. It's about a 15-minute drive from Portland International Jetport (PWM), making it convenient for your early morning flight.
- Downtown Portland - If you want to be close to the action and still have easy access to the waterfront, Downtown is a great choice. This area offers plenty of dining options, art galleries, and is very close to the Old Port. It’s also just a short drive or taxi ride to the airport. It's a bit quieter than Old Port but still very central and convenient.
- East End - For a slightly quieter experience, the East End of Portland, especially near the Munjoy Hill area, offers beautiful views of the harbor, local shops, and trendy restaurants. The area is less touristy, but still close enough to walk to the Old Port. It's a more residential area, making it a good choice if you want a peaceful retreat that’s still just a few minutes away from the main action. The airport is about a 15-minute drive away.
Overall, Old Port is your best bet if you're looking to be right in the middle of the action with plenty of dining, shopping, and bars within walking distance. If you prefer a quieter area with easy access to the action, East End could be a great option. Both areas are close to the airport, so you’ll have a short and easy drive on your departure day.
For your early flight, taxis, ride-shares, and even hotel shuttles (if available) can easily get you to the airport in under 15 minutes from any of these locations.
