Savannah Safety

First time to Savannah, going this August.

Got an Airbnb in what "apparently" is an "unsafe" area, not knowing that it was "unsafe". It's on the corner of MLK and Huntingdon.

Are there any locals here, or people who know Savannah really well, that can confirm or deny what I've been told by some friends who purport to know Savannah well? I'm a solo traveller, and they insist I should be staying much closer to the river near the tourist attractions.

Thanks in advance.

First of all, congratulations on choosing Savannah for your first visit! It's a beautiful and historic city with so much to offer. As a solo traveler, it's understandable that safety is a concern when selecting an area to stay, and it's great that you're seeking more information to make an informed decision.

The area around MLK and Huntingdon does have a mixed reputation. While some parts of Savannah can be less safe, the area around MLK and Huntingdon isn't necessarily one that should be immediately considered "unsafe." Like many cities, Savannah has neighborhoods that vary in terms of safety, and it’s important to understand that safety can depend on time of day, local circumstances, and personal awareness.

That said, here are some key points to consider:

  • Proximity to Attractions: The area you're staying in is not far from Savannah’s Historic District and the Riverfront. While it may not be in the heart of the tourist zone, it’s still relatively close to popular spots like Forsyth Park, City Market, and River Street. The walk from your Airbnb to these places would be about 10–15 minutes, though it’s always a good idea to stay aware of your surroundings when walking, especially at night.
  • Safety Tips: While the area isn't considered the "nicest" in Savannah, many solo travelers stay in this area without issues, particularly during the day. At night, it’s generally advisable to avoid less populated streets or areas that feel isolated. If you're unfamiliar with the area, taking an Uber or Lyft to get around at night can be a safer option than walking. Keep your belongings close, especially in any less busy areas.
  • Neighborhood Vibes: The area near MLK and Huntingdon is historically significant, but like many cities, it also has some parts that can feel less safe, especially after dark. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s dangerous, and it can vary from block to block. Locals often suggest sticking to well-lit areas and avoiding walking alone after dark, as you would in any city.
  • Locals' Advice: Savannah is generally a very friendly and welcoming city, and many of the locals who live here will suggest staying close to the Historic District or the river if you're new to town. The downtown area, which is more tourist-friendly and busy, tends to feel safer for those unfamiliar with the city, and many solo travelers prefer staying here for peace of mind.

In conclusion, while the area around MLK and Huntingdon isn’t the most popular among tourists for accommodations, it’s not inherently unsafe. Many solo travelers stay in this part of town and have a great experience. However, if you're feeling unsure or are looking for a more typical "tourist-friendly" area, you might want to consider finding accommodation closer to the Historic District or River Street for extra peace of mind. It's always a good idea to trust your instincts and take standard safety precautions, no matter where you stay.

Enjoy your time in Savannah! It's a beautiful city with so much to offer, and with a little planning, you should have a fantastic and safe experience.
