Where to stay?

Hubby and I late 50's looking to visit Savannah mid to late March to celebrate our 36th anniversary & both our birthdays, We like listenting to live music, window shopping, great food, flea markets, maybe bike riding. Wondering what area we should stay in? Also is this doable without renting a car as we will be flying in? If we do rent a car how is the parking situation at hotels & around Savannah? Is there free parking?

For a special occasion like celebrating your anniversary and birthdays, staying in or near Savannah’s Historic District is ideal. This area is the heart of the city and offers charming streets, live music venues, boutique shopping, and excellent restaurants, all within walking distance. It also gives you easy access to public squares, waterfront areas, and cultural attractions, making it very walkable without a car.

If you prefer a quieter, more residential feel, consider areas like the Victorian District or the southern portion of the Historic District. These neighborhoods are scenic, have historic homes, and are close enough to walk to key spots while being slightly less crowded.

  • Historic District: Best for walking, live music, dining, shopping, and sightseeing. Central location makes it easy to enjoy everything without a car.
  • Victorian District: Quieter, with historic charm and tree-lined streets. A good choice for a peaceful evening stroll.
  • Riverfront / River Street area: Great for dining and enjoying the waterfront, but busier and more tourist-focused.

Regarding transportation, Savannah is very walkable in the Historic District, and you can get by without a car if you plan to stay mostly downtown. For excursions outside the central area (like Tybee Island, Bonaventure Cemetery, or the flea markets on the outskirts), rideshare services or local tours can work. Pedicabs are also popular for short trips within the Historic District.

If you do rent a car, parking is available but can be limited. Many hotels offer valet or self-parking for a fee, usually ranging from $20–$40 per night. Street parking is metered and typically free in the evenings, but during busy tourist seasons or weekends it can be challenging to find free spots. Public parking garages exist throughout the city, and you can pay for daily or hourly rates.

  • Hotel parking: Most downtown hotels charge $20–$40 per night; some include it in resort fees.
  • Street parking: Limited and metered; often free after 6 pm or on Sundays in some areas.
  • Public garages: Convenient for day trips into the Historic District; daily rates typically $10–$20.

For your interests in live music and great food, staying near Broughton Street and the City Market area is ideal. You’ll have easy access to restaurants, bars, and live music venues. For bike rides, Savannah offers bike rentals and several scenic routes along the riverfront and through Forsyth Park.

In summary, staying in the Historic District gives you the best mix of convenience, charm, and access to everything Savannah has to offer. You can do most of your trip without a car, but renting one gives flexibility for exploring further afield, keeping in mind parking costs and availability.
