Hong Kong by train to Shenzhen

Hello, we are planning a stay in Hong Kong in November. We are also planning to travel to Guangdong for 2 nights. On the way to Guangdong I would like to make a stopover in Shenzhen. Which train connection is best to use if you want to go to Huaqiangbei Commercial Street in Shenzhen? Departure in Hong Kong (where?) and which destination station in Shenzhen?

Traveling from Hong Kong to Shenzhen by train is convenient, and reaching Huaqiangbei Commercial Street—the electronics and shopping hub in Shenzhen—requires selecting the right departure and arrival stations. Here’s a detailed guide:

Departure stations in Hong Kong:

  • Hung Hom Station: This is the main station for cross-border high-speed trains to Shenzhen and other cities in Guangdong. It is located in Kowloon and well-connected by MTR, taxis, and buses.
  • Kowloon West Kowloon Station: For high-speed trains, West Kowloon Station is often used for direct services to Shenzhen, particularly for Futian Station.

Arrival stations in Shenzhen:

  • Luohu Station: Convenient for tourists who want to cross the border and access the city. From Luohu Station, Huaqiangbei is about 20–30 minutes away by metro.
  • Futian Station: Serves high-speed trains from West Kowloon. Futian is also close to Huaqiangbei, roughly 15–20 minutes by metro.
  • Shenzhen North Station: Mainly for long-distance high-speed trains to other Chinese cities; less convenient for Huaqiangbei.

Recommended route to Huaqiangbei Commercial Street:

  • Take a high-speed train from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station to Shenzhen Futian Station. The journey takes around 14–20 minutes.
  • From Futian Station, take Shenzhen Metro Line 2 (the Shekou line) towards Chiwan and get off at Huaqiang Road Station. It is a short walk from there to Huaqiangbei Commercial Street.
  • If you arrive at Luohu Station instead, you can take Shenzhen Metro Line 1 (Luobao line) to Huaqiang Road Station, which takes about 20–25 minutes.

Additional tips:

  • Purchase your cross-border train tickets in advance, especially in November, which can be busy. Tickets can be bought online or at the station.
  • Ensure your travel documents are ready for crossing the Hong Kong–Shenzhen border, as immigration checks occur at both departure and arrival stations.
  • Metro navigation in Shenzhen is straightforward, with signs in English and Chinese, making it easy to reach Huaqiangbei.

In summary, the most efficient option is to take the high-speed train from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station to Shenzhen Futian Station, then transfer via Shenzhen Metro to Huaqiangbei Commercial Street. Alternatively, trains to Luohu Station also work but require slightly longer metro travel.
