Elder Octopus Card
Please walk me through the process of obtaining this card. I understand it's HK$70, how do I top off the amount as needed. I don't have an iphone or Huawei phone. What's the best/advantageous way of using this. Thank you so much, will arrive via air next week.
The Elder Octopus Card in Hong Kong is a convenient prepaid transport card specifically for seniors, allowing you to travel on MTR trains, buses, trams, ferries, and some retail outlets. Here’s a detailed guide on obtaining and using it.
Obtaining the Elder Octopus Card:
- You can get it at MTR Customer Service Centres at any MTR station, including the airport station.
- Bring your Hong Kong Identity Card if you are a resident, or your passport if you are a visitor (some temporary visitor cards are available, but usually normal adult Octopus cards are more common for non-residents; the senior version may require local ID).
- Pay the initial deposit of HK$70. This includes a refundable HK$50 deposit and HK$20 initial stored value.
Topping up the Elder Octopus Card:
- Top-up is easy at any MTR station, convenience stores like 7-Eleven, Circle K, or selected bus terminals.
- You can add any amount in increments of HK$50, HK$100, or as convenient, using cash or contactless payment if accepted.
- The card is reusable; any remaining balance and deposit are refundable upon returning the card.
Using the Elder Octopus Card:
- Tap at the MTR turnstiles, buses, trams, and ferries for automatic fare deduction.
- Using it avoids the need to carry exact cash and often gives small fare discounts on public transport.
- You don’t need a smartphone to use it; it works as a physical contactless card.
- For shopping, some convenience stores and fast food outlets accept it for small payments, which can be convenient for quick purchases.
Advantages of the Elder Octopus Card:
- Discounted fares for seniors on public transport.
- Convenience of not handling coins or bills for most daily travel.
- Widely accepted across Hong Kong’s transport network.
Tips:
- Keep the card in a wallet separate from metal objects to avoid reading errors.
- Check remaining balance at any MTR station or top-up location before long trips.
- Returning the card before leaving Hong Kong will allow you to get back your deposit and any remaining balance.
