Dulles Airport: Connecting to H terminal?

I've never been to IAD, and I've got an upcoming red-eye flight from Phoenix to Lancaster, PA that connects there. My flight to Phoenix is with United, and my flight to Lancaster is with Southern Airways. It seems like United flights use terminals C and D, and regional flights leave from terminal H, but I've looked at airport maps and there doesn't seem to be an easy connection. Do I have to get to Terminal B and then take the AeroTrain to H, or am I misunderstanding the map? My connection time is about an hour and 15 minutes. I'd love it if someone could describe exactly where I need to go so I can make this connection as efficiently as possible. Thank you!

Connecting at Washington Dulles Airport (IAD) from a United flight in Terminals C or D to a Southern Airways flight in Terminal H is manageable, but it does require using the AeroTrain system and some walking. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown for your 1 hour 15 minute connection:

1. Arrival at Terminal C or D: After your United flight lands, follow the signs for baggage claim if you need to collect checked luggage. If your luggage is checked through to Lancaster, you can skip this step. Proceed toward the main terminal area for connections.

2. Locate the AeroTrain station: The AeroTrain connects the main terminal (Concourse A/B/C/D) with Terminal H and the other concourses. In Terminals C and D, follow the signs labeled "AeroTrain to H Terminal." The station is inside the secure area, so you should not need to re-clear security if you remain airside.

3. Take the AeroTrain: Board the AeroTrain heading to Terminal H. The ride is typically about 4-5 minutes, with stops at Concourse C, then D, then H. Trains run frequently, around every 2-5 minutes.

4. Exit at Terminal H: Once at Terminal H, follow signs to your gate. Check the monitors for the exact gate for your Southern Airways flight, as H has multiple gates spread out. Allow at least 10-15 minutes to walk from the AeroTrain drop-off to the gate, especially if your gate is at the far end of the terminal.

Additional tips:

  • Time buffer: 1 hour 15 minutes is tight but usually doable if your inbound flight is on time. Keep an eye on the arrival time of your United flight and the AeroTrain status.
  • Security: If you need to re-clear security for Terminal H (rare, if airside), factor in extra time. Most connecting passengers remain within the secure area.
  • Travel light: If possible, travel with carry-on only to save time and avoid baggage claim.
  • Check gate updates: IAD gates can change; monitor airport monitors or airline apps for last-minute gate changes.
  • Ask airport staff: IAD has AeroTrain staff available for directions if you’re unsure; they can point you quickly to the H Terminal train.

In summary, you do not need to go to Terminal B separately. From Terminals C or D, you can take the AeroTrain directly to Terminal H. With timely arrival and minimal delays, your 1 hour 15 minute connection is achievable.
