Fairbanks Car Rentals for February
We are arriving in February and need to rent a car. We are visiting family and have been many times, but not in winter. We do have extensive winter driving experience, both here in the mountains of WA as well as Iceland in the winter.
Since our family up there does not rent vehicles, I am hoping some of you can help with who are reputable rental agencies and any that may not be the best.
Thank you in advance!
Renting a car in Fairbanks during February is completely feasible, especially given your extensive winter driving experience. Winter conditions in Fairbanks can be extreme, with temperatures often well below 0°F and snow/ice on roads, so selecting a reputable rental company with winter-ready vehicles is important.
Reputable rental agencies in Fairbanks:
- Enterprise Rent-A-Car – Located both at Fairbanks International Airport and in town, known for reliable vehicles and good winter service. They usually offer 4WD/AWD options and vehicles with winter tires.
- Hertz – Airport and city locations; generally good winter preparation and responsive customer service.
- Avis/Budget – Airport location; known for reasonable rates and standard winter-ready SUVs or AWD cars.
- Alaska Car Rentals / Local Agencies – Several local agencies (e.g., Fairbanks Car Rentals, Northern Alaska Car Rental) may offer competitive pricing and 4WD/AWD vehicles, but reviews vary. Check recent user reviews for winter reliability.
Tips and considerations for winter car rentals in Fairbanks:
- Always request a vehicle equipped with 4WD or AWD, and ensure it has winter tires installed; some agencies swap tires seasonally.
- Check the rental policy on snow chains or other winter driving equipment—most agencies include them or can provide on request.
- Inspect the vehicle thoroughly before accepting it: battery condition, tire tread, antifreeze levels, windshield wipers, and heater function are crucial in extreme cold.
- Consider pickup at the airport if your flight arrives in the evening, so you can be on the road immediately, rather than relying on local office hours.
- Book early, as winter rentals in Fairbanks can be limited, especially for 4WD vehicles.
Agencies to be cautious about:
- Smaller local agencies with limited winter experience or low review counts. Some may have older vehicles not prepared for extreme cold.
- Discount online-only reservations that may not account for winter conditions or fail to guarantee AWD/4WD.
In summary, sticking with well-known national chains or reputable local agencies with confirmed winter-prepared vehicles will ensure a safe and smooth experience. Your winter driving experience will be a big asset, but preparation and a reliable rental are key in Fairbanks February conditions.
