Visiting for Northern lights in February-which tour to take

HI, my husband I will be visiting for 5 nights in 3rd week of Feb. We are considering booking the 3 nights with Alaska Aurora Adventures. Their package says they will take us out for 3nights from 10PM-3AM. Firstly, has anyone used them, and how was it?

2nd: do they give us the winter gear?

3> is there a different company anyone suggests?

Visiting Fairbanks in February for the Northern Lights is a fantastic experience, as this is one of the prime months for aurora viewing due to long nights and often clear skies. Many visitors base their trips around guided aurora tours to maximize their chances of seeing the lights, since the aurora can be elusive and conditions vary night to night.

Alaska Aurora Adventures is a well-regarded company in Fairbanks. Their 3-night package running from approximately 10PM–3AM is designed to give guests multiple opportunities to see the aurora and includes travel to remote locations away from city lights. Guests typically report knowledgeable guides, cozy warm setups at viewing sites, and good photo opportunities.

Regarding winter gear:

  • Most aurora tour companies, including Alaska Aurora Adventures, provide insulated parkas, boots, and sometimes hand warmers. However, you will likely need to bring your own warm base layers, hats, gloves, and thermal socks to stay fully comfortable during the long hours outside in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Layering is key: think moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and the warm outer gear provided by the tour.

If you are considering alternatives, there are a few other reputable aurora tour companies in Fairbanks:

  • Chena Hot Springs Resort Tours: Offers aurora viewing packages along with the bonus of hot springs, allowing for a warm soak while waiting for the lights.
  • Fairbanks Aurora Tours: Small-group tours focusing on aurora photography and remote viewing, often with expert guides who help set up cameras.
  • Coldfoot or Northern Alaska Adventure Tours: Options for more adventurous, off-the-beaten-path aurora chasing, suitable for those comfortable in deeper winter conditions.

Tips for maximizing your aurora experience:

  • Book multiple nights of tours if possible, as aurora activity is not guaranteed every night.
  • Check the aurora forecast apps and websites to anticipate high activity nights, even if your tour spans multiple days.
  • Bring a tripod and camera with manual settings if photography is a priority, and confirm if the tour offers photography assistance.

Overall, Alaska Aurora Adventures is a solid choice for a multi-night Northern Lights tour. Ensuring you are dressed warmly in layers and possibly exploring alternative providers for different experiences (like hot springs or photography-focused tours) can enhance your 5-night stay in Fairbanks.
