Christmas Stay - Best Luxury Hotel

We fly in on Christmas Day & looking for the best luxury hotel for 4 nights that is well appointed & centrally located to museums, restaurants, White House etc. looking at both Marriott St Regis, Four seasons, JW Marriott, Mayflower), or any luxury level Hilton branded hotels as have friends and family level price access with both brands. While we expect to do lots of sightseeing and likely go to a Commanders game on the last day before flying home, we would love to spoil ourselves for the holidays and enjoy staying in, enjoying the hotel bar, room service and gym. Only been to DC once and will be my husbands first time, so open to all suggestions as well as any must-dos! Thank you in advance for recommendations. (Late 30s couple of that helps too!)

For a luxurious Christmas stay in Washington DC, you’ll want a hotel that combines elegance, central location, and high-end amenities to make your holiday trip special. The hotels you mentioned—Marriott St. Regis, Four Seasons, JW Marriott, and Mayflower—are all excellent options, with slightly different vibes and advantages.

Here’s a breakdown of your choices:

  • St. Regis Washington, D.C.: Iconic luxury, classic décor, highly attentive service, and a renowned King Cole Bar. Centrally located near Lafayette Square, White House, and easy walking distance to the National Mall. Excellent for indulging in room service and holiday luxury.
  • Four Seasons Washington, D.C.: Modern and spacious rooms with a focus on comfort and spa amenities. Also centrally located near the Georgetown area and Dupont Circle, not far from museums. Great for enjoying gym, spa, and sophisticated in-house dining.
  • JW Marriott Washington, D.C.: Grand and historic property with a stately lobby. Located close to the White House and museums. Offers a luxury feel with the convenience of a large hotel and Hilton-affiliated benefits if you have access. Good bar and dining options.
  • Willard InterContinental (Mayflower alternative): Historic charm, very close to the National Christmas Tree, the National Mall, and major sights. The bar and restaurants are excellent, and the historic ambiance adds to the holiday experience.

Luxury-level Hilton-branded hotels, if accessible via friends and family rates, are also worth considering for the combination of modern comfort and central location, although most of them will not match the historic character or intimate luxury of St. Regis or Four Seasons.

For your sightseeing and holiday enjoyment, consider these tips:

  • Book timed-entry tickets in advance for popular museums (e.g., Air & Space, Natural History) to maximize your days.
  • Walk to nearby attractions like the White House, National Christmas Tree, and surrounding monuments to soak in the holiday lights and decorations.
  • Reserve a table at a hotel restaurant for a festive Christmas dinner if local restaurants are fully booked; many hotels offer special holiday menus.
  • For the Commanders game, plan transportation in advance, as public transit or rideshares can be busy post-holiday weekend games.

Overall, for a first-time Christmas in DC with a focus on luxury and convenience, the St. Regis and Four Seasons stand out for high-end indulgence, proximity to key sights, and excellent in-house amenities. JW Marriott and the Mayflower are excellent as well, particularly if historic grandeur and walking proximity to the National Mall are priorities.
