Hop On Hop Off tour options
I am taking a friend from China to Washington DC Thursday for a day trip. Normally I would walk everywhere supplemented by the Washington Metro.
But I have a sore left foot. Just in case I need to, can you share your opinions on various Hop On Hop Off options. I am familiar with the Big Bus and the Hop On Hop Off Trolley.
I will read their websites. A nice to have would be commentary in Mandarin although my friend understands English.
Also, are the Circulator buses still running or have they been discontinued?
Thank you in advance.
For a day trip in Washington DC where walking is limited due to a sore foot, Hop On Hop Off (HOHO) tours are a convenient option to see the city’s main sights with minimal walking. Both Big Bus and the Hop On Hop Off Trolley are popular, but each has different features that may suit your needs.
Big Bus Tours:
- Offers multiple routes covering major landmarks like the National Mall, Lincoln Memorial, Capitol, and Georgetown.
- Allows unlimited hop-on, hop-off with a valid ticket, making it flexible if you need to rest or skip certain stops.
- Some buses provide audio commentary in multiple languages, including Mandarin on certain tours or via an app, which could benefit your friend.
- Air-conditioned buses provide comfort during hot or rainy weather.
Hop On Hop Off Trolley:
- Smaller fleet of trolleys with slightly different routes; some focus on downtown and museum areas.
- Hop-on, hop-off flexibility is similar, though trolley frequency may be slightly lower than Big Bus.
- Audio commentary is usually in English; check with the provider if Mandarin options are available.
- Trolleys tend to have a more historic aesthetic, which some visitors find charming for photos and ambiance.
Circulator Buses:
- The DC Circulator is still running and offers affordable bus routes connecting key areas like the National Mall, Capitol Hill, Georgetown, and Union Station.
- Circulator buses are less tourist-focused, with no audio commentary, but they are frequent, reliable, and wheelchair accessible.
- They are a cost-effective backup if your foot needs a break from walking between Hop On Hop Off stops.
Additional Tips:
- Start your day early to maximize sightseeing with fewer crowds.
- Check real-time schedules for both HOHO and Circulator buses, as traffic or maintenance can affect frequency.
- If Mandarin commentary is important, confirm with the Big Bus provider or download their audio guide app in advance.
- Carry a small seat cushion or support if you anticipate sitting for long periods; this can help your sore foot.
- Plan stops near major landmarks where you can hop off briefly to stretch without walking long distances.
Overall, for your situation, Big Bus offers the most comprehensive coverage and comfort with potential Mandarin commentary, while the Circulator provides an inexpensive, accessible alternative if you want more flexibility. Combining a HOHO bus for sightseeing with occasional Circulator rides is a practical approach for a one-day DC trip with limited walking.
