Hiking in las vegas and the vicinity

Hi, I am going to be at the start of Decemebr in Las vegas and plan to do some hiking there and also in Zion reservation. Since i am a solo traveler, wanted to ask here if :

1. Is it safe to hike on my own in Las vegas main hiking trails and in Zion?

2. What is the best places to find hiking partners?

Thanks!

Hiking around Las Vegas and Zion National Park in early December can be a fantastic experience, as the temperatures are generally cooler and the crowds are smaller. However, there are important safety and planning considerations, especially as a solo traveler.

1. Safety for solo hiking:

  • Las Vegas area trails: Popular trails like Red Rock Canyon (Calico Hills, Ice Box Canyon), Mount Charleston (Cathedral Rock, Mary Jane Falls), and Sloan Canyon are generally safe for solo hikers during daylight hours. Make sure to stay on marked trails, carry plenty of water, and wear proper footwear. Cell service can be spotty in some areas.
  • Zion National Park: Many trails in Zion, such as Angels Landing, Emerald Pools, and Canyon Overlook, are well-trafficked and safe for solo hikers, but Angels Landing has narrow paths with steep drop-offs. Solo hiking is possible, but extra caution is advised—consider starting early to avoid crowds and ensure you have enough daylight.
  • Weather in December can be cooler, especially in higher elevations like Mount Charleston or parts of Zion. Dress in layers and be prepared for sudden changes.

2. Finding hiking partners:

  • Meetup.com: There are local hiking groups in both Las Vegas and Zion that organize day hikes and multi-day trips. Look for groups labeled beginner-friendly or social hikes.
  • Local outdoor shops: Stores like REI in Las Vegas often host group hikes or have bulletin boards where you can find hiking partners.
  • Hostels and lodging: Even if you stay in hotels, check for adventure or tour desks—many hostels or lodges in the Zion Springdale area have organized hikes or shuttle groups.
  • Guided tours: If you prefer a fully safe experience, consider guided hikes in both areas. This is especially recommended for more challenging trails like Angels Landing or Ice Box Canyon.

Additional tips:

  • Always tell someone your hiking plan and expected return time.
  • Carry water, snacks, a map or GPS, and basic first aid supplies.
  • Check park websites for trail closures or alerts before heading out.
  • Start early in the day to ensure you finish before sunset, especially in winter months.

Overall, solo hiking is possible and enjoyable in both the Las Vegas area and Zion National Park in December, provided you follow safety precautions, prepare properly, and consider joining local groups or guided hikes for companionship and added safety.
