Noseeums

FWIW. Just back from Marathon and had over 40 bites. So just an FYI for anyone susceptible to that sort of thing.

Noseeums, also known as biting midges, are very small insects common in the Florida Keys, particularly in areas like Marathon. They are notorious for leaving multiple itchy bites, often in clusters, and can be quite bothersome for those sensitive to insect bites.

Based on recent experiences, it seems that noseeums are still prevalent, and even short outdoor exposure can result in numerous bites.

To minimize bites, here are some practical tips:

  • Use a strong insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin on exposed skin.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk when these insects are most active.
  • Consider treating clothing with permethrin for added protection.
  • Stay in accommodations with air conditioning or window screens to reduce exposure indoors.
  • Applying topical anti-itch creams or taking antihistamines can help manage reactions after bites.

Even with precautions, some people may still get bitten, so it’s important to be prepared and plan outdoor activities accordingly.
