Best way to get from Homer to Talkeetna?
My family (spouse and 3 kids ages 7-13) will be traveling to AK in August and we're trying to figure out how to tack on a trip to Talkeetna, after our Kenai Peninsula Trip. Ideally we want to take the train at some point, but northbound departures are 8:20am out of Anchorage, and we don't want to go back to Anchorage and spend a night there if we don't have to. One idea that seems efficient is flying from Homer to Talkeetna (then take train southbound from Talkeetna to ANC and fly home), but I'm not sure if any air companies do this. Does anyone know?
Traveling from Homer to Talkeetna with your family in August can be a bit tricky because Homer does not have direct commercial flights to Talkeetna, and the Alaska Railroad’s northbound train from Anchorage has a fixed early departure. However, there are a few options to consider that balance efficiency and your desire to include train travel.
Option 1: Fly from Homer to Anchorage, then train southbound from Talkeetna
- Take a morning or early afternoon flight from Homer to Anchorage. Airlines such as Ravn Alaska operate daily flights between Homer and ANC, usually around 1 hour.
- From Anchorage, drive or shuttle to Talkeetna (approx. 2–2.5 hours) and spend a night there.
- The next day, board a southbound Alaska Railroad train from Talkeetna to Anchorage to finish your journey. This avoids backtracking from Anchorage northbound early in the morning.
Option 2: Private air charter from Homer to Talkeetna
- Several air charter companies operate out of Homer and offer flights to Talkeetna, including Rust’s Flying Service and other local operators.
- This option is more expensive than scheduled airline service but allows you to bypass Anchorage and land directly in Talkeetna, saving travel time and a hotel night in Anchorage.
- You would need to book well in advance, especially for a family of five, and verify luggage limitations.
Option 3: Drive via Anchorage or Seward highway
- Drive from Homer north via Anchorage to Talkeetna (approx. 7–8 hours total). This is the most flexible but also the longest option, and might be tiring for the kids.
- You could break the drive with a stop in Anchorage or along the scenic route near Wasilla.
Additional Tips:
- If your main goal is to experience the train, the southbound Talkeetna to Anchorage segment works well with a flexible schedule.
- Book flights and train tickets well in advance for August, which is peak tourist season in Alaska.
- Consider overnight lodging in Talkeetna to explore the town, enjoy views of Denali, and reduce rush for the train departure.
In summary, the most efficient approach for your family, without backtracking to Anchorage for a northbound train, is either to charter a flight directly from Homer to Talkeetna or fly to Anchorage and drive north to Talkeetna to catch a southbound train. The charter flight is the fastest but costlier, while flying to Anchorage plus driving gives a balance of convenience and cost.
