Activities for 5 year old girl

We will be in Washington DC December 30 through January 2. Please let me know if there are any special activities we could bring our five-year-old girl to enjoy. Either any special musicals like frozen or lion King? Any particular museums or even a great indoor playground? Happy to hear any suggestions thank you so much.

Visiting Washington DC over the New Year with a five-year-old can be a lot of fun, especially with a mix of museums, performances, and indoor activities that are family-friendly. December and early January can be chilly, so indoor options are particularly convenient.

Here are some recommendations for activities and attractions suitable for a five-year-old:

  • Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (National Mall): Engaging for children with hands-on exhibits, flight simulators, and interactive areas like “How Things Fly.”
  • Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (National Mall): Dinosaur skeletons, the Insect Zoo, and the Ocean Hall are always popular with young children.
  • Smithsonian National Museum of American History (National Mall): The “Spark!Lab” area lets kids experiment and explore creativity, perfect for hands-on learning.
  • The National Children’s Museum (Penn Quarter): Designed specifically for children, it combines science, technology, engineering, arts, and math in interactive exhibits and workshops.
  • Indoor Playgrounds and Activity Centers:
    • Magic Funhouse or Busy Bees Play Café – fun indoor play areas suitable for young kids.
    • Playseum – interactive exhibits designed for kids, focusing on art and imaginative play.
  • Theater Performances: Check schedules at the Kennedy Center, Washington National Opera, and Theatre at the Arena Stage for family-friendly musicals. Productions like Frozen or The Lion King may occasionally have performances around the holiday season. Booking in advance is highly recommended.
  • Zoo Visit: The Smithsonian National Zoo is free and open year-round. Even in winter, the indoor exhibits like the Giant Panda House are enjoyable, and some seasonal events like Zoolights may still be running in early January.

Additional tips:

  • Many museums have coat checks and cafés, making it easy to plan a half-day visit without worrying about winter weather.
  • Consider combining a museum morning with a short indoor playground or café stop in the afternoon to keep energy levels balanced.
  • Check local event calendars for special holiday or New Year-themed events aimed at young children; sometimes theaters or museums have crafts or performances specifically for this age group.

Overall, a mix of hands-on museums, a possible theater outing, and indoor play areas should make the trip memorable and engaging for a five-year-old without being overwhelming.
