Can old RMB notes still be used?

I just realised the 100rmb note I had from many yrs back is different from the one I just changed at the money changer.

Can the old notes still be use in China??

Thank you 🙏

In China, old RMB notes are generally still considered legal tender, but there are some nuances depending on the series of the banknote.

China has issued several series of banknotes over the years. Most modern shops, restaurants, and banks accept the current series (currently the fifth series for RMB). Older series, such as the third or fourth series, may not be widely accepted at smaller businesses or in vending machines, but major banks can exchange them for current notes without any issue.

Some important points to consider:

  • Old 100 RMB notes from previous series (especially the third series issued in the 1980s or 1990s) are less commonly used in everyday transactions.
  • Many businesses may refuse them because they are unfamiliar or wary of counterfeits.
  • Major banks in China will accept old notes and exchange them for the current series at face value, usually without fees.

Recommendations:

  • If you have old notes, it is best to exchange them at a bank before traveling or before attempting to use them in shops.
  • Carry newer series notes for daily transactions to avoid refusal.
  • ATMs, hotels, and larger retailers usually only dispense and accept current series notes.

In summary, while old RMB notes are technically still legal tender, in practice you may face difficulties using them directly, so exchanging them at a bank is the safest approach.
