3 days in January
I’ll be in Boulder for 3 days in January. Any advice of what to do during the day? I’m not comfortable hiking by myself. Thanks in advance!
Boulder is a charming city with plenty to do even if you’re not comfortable hiking alone, especially in January when it can be chilly. You can enjoy scenic drives, cultural sites, and indoor activities while still experiencing the beauty of the area.
Here are some daytime suggestions:
- Pearl Street Mall: A pedestrian street full of shops, cafes, and street performers. Great for strolling, shopping for local crafts, and grabbing a coffee or lunch.
- Chautauqua Park: Even if you don’t hike, the parking area and meadows offer scenic views of the Flatirons. Short, flat walks near the base are possible and safe.
- Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art: Small but engaging museum showcasing local and regional artists.
- Fiske Planetarium (University of Colorado Boulder): Offers public shows that are enjoyable and educational, perfect for a chilly day.
- Boulder Creek Path: A flat trail along the creek for a gentle walk or jog, safe and scenic in winter.
If you’re open to short excursions outside Boulder:
- NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research): Offers exhibits about weather and climate with spectacular views of Boulder from the mesa. Indoor exhibits make it ideal for January.
- Flatirons Vista Drive: A scenic drive with pull-offs for photos, giving you a great look at the iconic rock formations without needing to hike.
- Celestial Seasonings Tea Factory Tour: Located in nearby Gunbarrel, the factory tour is indoor, fun, and a local favorite.
Additional tips:
- Dress warmly and in layers as January in Boulder can be cold and windy.
- Check local weather and road conditions if driving to surrounding viewpoints.
- Many cafes and small eateries along Pearl Street provide cozy spots to relax between activities.
With these options, you can enjoy Boulder safely, comfortably, and without needing to hike alone, while still experiencing the city’s charm and nearby scenery.
