Planning to visit Yunnan (Kunming-Lijiang-ShangriLa)

Hi travellers. I'm planning to visit Kunming - Lijiang - ShangriLa from 28 Jan to 9 Feb. The travel period co-incide with the coming Chinese New Year celebration. Please advise if it is worth to visit these places during abovementioned period. Travelling with 2 Adult and 2 Kids. Mind to share the hectic experience which some of you had experience before. Thanks in advance.

Visiting Yunnan during the period from 28 January to 9 February will coincide with the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) celebrations, which in 2025 fall on February 10th. Traveling during this period offers a unique cultural experience but also comes with some challenges, especially when traveling with children.

1. Pros of Visiting During Chinese New Year

This is one of the most festive times in China, and Yunnan’s cities offer vibrant celebrations, local performances, and traditional decorations. Some benefits include:

  • Opportunity to experience authentic Chinese New Year traditions, including temple fairs, lantern displays, and local festivities.
  • Special seasonal food and delicacies available in markets and restaurants.
  • Fewer international tourists compared to summer, so some attractions may be less crowded with foreigners.

2. Cons and Challenges

However, the holiday period is also the busiest domestic travel season in China. This can make logistics more hectic:

  • Train, bus, and flight tickets are in very high demand; booking well in advance is essential.
  • Popular tourist sites in Kunming, Lijiang, and Shangri-La can be crowded with domestic travelers, especially around peak festival dates.
  • Hotels may be more expensive and have limited availability.
  • Public transport and attractions may experience longer queues and wait times.

3. Travel Tips for Families

  • Book all transport and accommodations as early as possible, preferably several months in advance.
  • Start sightseeing early in the day to avoid the peak crowds at major attractions.
  • Plan for a slower pace with kids, allowing extra time for meals, rest, and moving through crowded areas.
  • Consider visiting less crowded attractions or exploring local towns and villages outside major tourist spots to balance the experience.
  • Check for special holiday closures or reduced hours at attractions to avoid surprises.

4. Recommended Itinerary Adjustments

  • Kunming (2–3 days): Visit Stone Forest, Green Lake, and local markets early in the holiday period when it may be slightly quieter.
  • Lijiang (3–4 days): Explore Old Town and Black Dragon Pool, but avoid peak festival days in the town center if possible.
  • Shangri-La (2–3 days): Focus on natural scenery like Tiger Leaping Gorge and Songzanlin Monastery; mornings are best for clear views.

In summary, visiting Yunnan during the Chinese New Year period is definitely worth it for the festive experience and cultural exposure. However, be prepared for crowded transport, busier attractions, and slightly higher costs. Careful planning, early bookings, and flexible scheduling will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable family trip.
