240 transit free allow visit shilin

Hello..on the list of permitted areas in Yunnan ..they allow us to visit kunming with the 240 hour transit free ..

Does anyone know if they allow he visit to shilin stone forest as its not technically in kunming?

The 240-hour visa-free transit in China is a generous option for travelers passing through certain cities, including Kunming. However, it comes with strict geographic limits: you are only permitted to stay within the administrative area(s) specified for the transit.

For Kunming, the transit-free policy allows you to visit the city itself and the surrounding areas within the jurisdiction of Kunming municipality. The Shilin Stone Forest is located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, which is administratively part of Kunming. Therefore, visiting Shilin from Kunming is generally considered allowed under the 240-hour visa-free transit, as long as you do not leave the Kunming administrative area.

Important considerations:

  • Shilin Stone Forest is about 90 kilometers southeast of Kunming city center. Travel can be by taxi, car hire, or organized tour, and typically takes 1.5–2 hours one way.
  • Always carry your passport, arrival card, and proof of onward travel when visiting outside the city center, as local police or checkpoints may ask to see them.
  • Do not travel beyond Kunming’s administrative boundaries, such as into neighboring cities or provinces, as that would violate the transit visa rules and could result in fines or deportation.

In summary, a visit to the Shilin Stone Forest is allowed under the 240-hour transit policy in Kunming, since it is part of the Kunming municipality. Just make sure to stay within the permitted area and follow all immigration and local regulations.
