Impact of construction at Moana Surfrider?

My husband and I will be in Waikiki the 2nd week of January and had planned to stay at the Surfrider as we have stayed there before and enjoyed the courtyard and the porch and easy beach access- we are booked in an ocean side room in the historic building (not the tower). I am wondering if we should stay at Royal Hawaiian instead because of the construction. Anyone there this month that has some insight? Thanks.

Aloha! It's great to hear that you're planning a return visit to Waikiki. The Moana Surfrider is a beautiful hotel with its iconic courtyard and beachfront location, but you’re right to consider the potential impact of construction on your stay. As of late 2023, the Moana Surfrider has been undergoing some renovation and construction work, particularly in certain areas of the hotel like the beachfront pool and some parts of the historic building. This construction could potentially cause some noise or disruptions, especially during daytime hours. While the hotel has been working to minimize disruption to guests, noise could still be noticeable in certain areas of the property, depending on the construction schedule and where your room is located.

If you are concerned about the potential impact of construction on your experience, here are a few things to consider:

  • Historic Oceanfront Room Location: Since you’re booked in an ocean-side room in the historic building, it's important to note that this is likely one of the more charming, iconic rooms of the property. While the location is perfect for beach access, it might be closer to the construction zone. You might want to reach out to the hotel to confirm the specific location of your room to assess whether it will be affected by the construction noise.
  • Time of Year: The second week of January is still considered a peak tourist time in Waikiki, so there may be additional guests and the possibility of more activity around the hotel. However, construction typically slows down a bit during holidays, so noise might be more manageable. It's worth checking in with the hotel for their planned schedule during your stay.
  • Alternatives - The Royal Hawaiian: If you are really concerned about construction disruptions, the Royal Hawaiian (which is also part of the Luxury Collection, like the Moana Surfrider) is another great option. The Royal Hawaiian offers a similar beachside location with a historic charm and is known for its luxury experience. While there is construction on Waikiki Beach in general, the Royal Hawaiian's location and layout may offer a quieter experience compared to the Moana Surfrider during this time.

In summary, both hotels are fantastic, but the Moana Surfrider's current construction could be an issue for some guests. If you're looking for a quieter experience with less impact from construction, the Royal Hawaiian might be a safer bet. However, if you love the Moana Surfrider and feel that the renovations won't be too disruptive, you may still enjoy your stay there. It’s always a good idea to contact the hotel directly to inquire about the construction schedule, potential noise levels, and any specific updates for your dates of stay.
