Luggage storage

We will be boarding in Seward but want to visit the town first. Is there a place to store baggage or can we go ahead and board and then get off the ship to visit the area?

In Seward, cruise passengers generally have a couple of options for handling luggage before boarding, as well as ways to explore the town once you arrive.

1. Early Ship Boarding and Luggage Drop: Most cruise lines allow passengers to board the ship a few hours before official embarkation and drop off their luggage. You can then either wait in public areas on the ship or disembark to explore Seward. However, you need to check with your specific cruise line regarding the timing and policies, as some may not allow disembarking once luggage is dropped until a certain time.

2. Luggage Storage in Town: Seward is a small town, and options for short-term luggage storage are limited. Some local businesses, hotels, or tour operators may provide storage for a fee if you inquire in advance. Options include:

  • Hotels near the port (even if not staying overnight) sometimes allow luggage drop for visitors.
  • Local tour companies may store luggage for their guests for a day if you’re booked on a tour.
  • Check for any small luggage storage services or lockers around the harbor area, though these are not guaranteed.

3. Board First, Explore Later: If allowed by the cruise line, you can board the ship, drop off your luggage with the porters, and then walk or take a short taxi/ride to explore Seward. The town is small and walkable, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and attractions like the Alaska SeaLife Center and small harbor areas.

Tips:

  • Confirm the earliest time you can drop off luggage with your cruise line to plan your day efficiently.
  • If leaving the ship after dropping luggage, carry a small bag with essentials and your ID.
  • Be mindful of your ship’s departure time and allow enough time to return and board.

In summary, your best approach is usually to drop off luggage at the ship as early as allowed and then explore Seward, since dedicated storage facilities in town are limited.
