Wife and I flew to Maui for the holidays and had a great time.. She grew up in Paia so we usually get to Maui once a year or so. As usual chilled at Napili Kai and the weather was fantastic. Two things of note:
1. Takumi is a new sushi place in the Fairway shops. It is EXCELLENT but pricy. We ordered takeout twice and both times the food was great and was ready at the specified time.
2. As others have noted the surf was quite high on 12/22. How high? Google the Eddie and Jaws and see the incredible videos. And on a memorable personal note, we were sitting in chairs on the beach right by the sidewalk near the cabana at NKBR when at high tide that morning a wave crashed through us and knocked us out of our chairs. It then rushed through the cabana. No one was hurt and we recovered all of our stuff with the exception of one of my wife's slippers (aka sandal). In thirty years of visiting NK we have never seen surf that high.
It sounds like you had an amazing time in Maui, despite the memorable encounter with high surf! Here’s a summary of your trip with some highlights:
1. Takumi Sushi: This new sushi restaurant in the Fairway Shops sounds like a fantastic find! It's great to hear that the food and takeout service were excellent, even if a bit on the pricier side. For sushi lovers, it seems like it’s worth the splurge. You mentioned ordering takeout twice, and the food being ready at the specified time is always a big plus. Definitely a place to consider for those who enjoy fresh sushi in the area.
2. High Surf Experience: The high surf on December 22nd seems to have been a very intense and unforgettable experience! It’s wild to think of the waves being strong enough to actually crash through the area by the cabana at Napili Kai Beach Resort. It must have been quite a sight (and a little frightening) to have the wave knock you out of your chairs and rush through the cabana. It's a good reminder of the power of the ocean, especially during high tide and high surf conditions. Thankfully, you all recovered your belongings, aside from one of your wife's sandals. It's a good thing no one got hurt! As you mentioned, it’s a rare occurrence for the surf to reach such extreme heights, so it must have been a memorable (if a bit scary) moment during your stay.
Overall, it sounds like you had a great time despite the unexpected high surf. For those planning future trips, it’s worth noting that the surf can get very high in certain areas of Maui during winter months, so it's good to keep an eye on the surf reports and safety conditions. But, with great food and good memories made, your trip seems to have been a perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and a bit of excitement!
