Hike around Hawley lake

We are staying a few days in Pinetop. One of those days we would like to go to Hawley Lake. I would like to hike around the lake and I’m wondering if there’s a trail. If anyone has hiked around Holly Lake before, let me know what to expect. Is there a trail around the lake? And where should I start that hike? Thank you.

Hawley Lake is a scenic destination located northeast of Pinetop-Lakeside in the White Mountains of Arizona. It’s well-known for its serene setting, fishing, and occasional snow in early spring. If you’re looking to hike around the lake, here’s what you should know.

There isn’t a formal maintained trail that loops entirely around Hawley Lake. The terrain around the lake is mostly forested with some marshy areas along the shoreline, which can make a full loop hike challenging in certain seasons, especially after rain or during snowmelt. However, casual walking and short hikes along the shoreline are very doable.

What you can expect:

  • The lake is approximately 1 mile long and 0.3 miles wide, so a full perimeter walk is roughly 2-2.5 miles depending on the route.
  • The shoreline is a mix of soft dirt paths, sandy or pebbly edges, and occasional rocky sections.
  • Some areas near the north and south ends are more open and easy to walk; other sections may require minor bushwhacking or walking a few feet inland from the water.
  • Wildlife is abundant; you may see ducks, geese, and deer along the edges.

Recommended starting points and tips:

  • Hawley Lake Campground: The most common access is from the small parking area at the campground on the western side of the lake. From here, you can easily walk along the western shoreline and extend your hike north or south as conditions allow.
  • North Shore Picnic Area: There’s a small day-use area on the northern edge which allows access to the northern end of the lake and a gentle walk along the water.
  • Wear waterproof or sturdy shoes, especially if the ground is wet or muddy.
  • Bring water and snacks, as there are no services at the lake.
  • Check for seasonal closures; Hawley Lake can be closed or partially inaccessible in winter due to snow.

If you’re looking for a more structured hike in the area, consider nearby Black Mesa or the Woodland Lake Trail in Pinetop, which offer maintained paths and scenic forested terrain. But for a relaxing lakeside walk, starting at the campground or picnic areas and following the shoreline is your best option.
