Blue spring state park
We are going to st Augustine next week with my baby and 4 year old and are planning to go down to see the manatees for a day at Blue Spring State park. Was seeing what else was in the area where we could spend the day there. Thank you!
Blue Spring State Park, located near Orange City, is a fantastic destination to see manatees, especially in the winter months when they gather in the warm spring waters. It's very family-friendly, with boardwalks and easy walking paths that make it accessible even with a baby and young children.
Aside from watching manatees, the park offers:
- Picnic areas with tables and grills, perfect for a relaxed lunch outdoors.
- Short nature trails suitable for young kids, offering opportunities to see native Florida wildlife and birds.
- Swimming and snorkeling in the spring-run area during the summer months (note: in winter, swimming is usually not allowed due to manatee protection).
- Ranger-led programs and educational talks about the manatees and local ecosystem.
If you’re planning to spend the whole day in the area, you might consider combining your visit with nearby attractions:
- DeLeon Springs State Park: About 15 minutes away, it features a natural spring with swimming, picnic areas, and a pancake house where you can cook your own pancakes at the table—a fun activity for kids.
- Hontoon Island State Park: A short drive south with ferry access, offering kayaking, picnicking, and trails in a peaceful island setting.
- Lake Monroe or St. Johns River boat tours: Nearby waterways offer scenic views, occasional wildlife sightings, and a relaxing break from walking around the parks.
Practical tips:
- Arrive early to secure parking, especially on weekends.
- Bring snacks, sunscreen, hats, and water; facilities are limited inside the park.
- Binoculars are handy for spotting manatees from the observation decks.
- Check the park’s website for any manatee viewing updates or seasonal closures before you go.
With these options, you can make a full, enjoyable day out for your family combining wildlife viewing, light hiking, and some unique local experiences without needing to drive far.
