Driving to Telluride

Hi..I am coming from East Coast to attend wedding in Telluride in Sept. deathly afraid of heights. Wondering how drive is from Montrose? Has anyone driven from Flagstaff?

I am looking for the path of least resistance, hate driving in areas with steep drop offs etc

If you are concerned about heights and steep drop-offs, it’s important to plan your route to Telluride carefully. Telluride is located in a box canyon at ~8,750 ft, so any approach involves some mountainous driving, but some routes are less intimidating than others.

From Montrose, Colorado:

The most common route from Montrose is via CO-145, which runs through Norwood and over Lizard Head Pass (elevation ~10,222 ft). The drive is about 65 miles and generally considered the “standard” route to Telluride:

  • This route is paved, well-maintained, and commonly used by visitors and locals.
  • Although Lizard Head Pass has steep sections, the road has guardrails and switchbacks. The grades are manageable if you are cautious.
  • The drive offers beautiful scenery but does not require cliff-hugging maneuvers. If you’re very nervous about heights, it may still feel a bit high in places, but it’s one of the safest options.

From Flagstaff, Arizona:

Driving from Flagstaff is a much longer route (roughly 450 miles) and requires traveling north through I-40 and then west via Durango or Montrose. The terrain is mountainous as you approach Telluride:

  • You will encounter steep canyons and switchbacks, especially on CO-145 if coming via Durango.
  • The distance and unfamiliar roads can add stress if you are anxious about heights.

Tips for Minimizing Anxiety:

  • Drive during daylight for better visibility.
  • If possible, have a co-pilot who can handle navigation and provide reassurance.
  • Consider flying into Montrose Regional Airport and renting a car there for the shortest and easiest approach.
  • Take breaks along the way to enjoy the scenery without feeling pressured by driving.

Summary Recommendation:

For someone with a fear of heights, the Montrose to Telluride route is the path of least resistance. Avoid the Flagstaff route unless you enjoy a long scenic drive with more high-altitude passes. Montrose is your best option for minimizing steep drops and having a relatively straightforward drive to Telluride.
