Day trip in Sequoia from Fresno

In mid-June, we plan to drive from Fresno, through the park, and end up in Visalia that night.

Any advice for must-see or must-do experiences in a day? We will at the park arrive early in the morning.

Thanks in advance!

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are absolutely breathtaking, and a day trip from Fresno is a great way to experience some of the highlights. Since you’re planning to arrive early in the morning, you’ll have a good amount of time to see several key spots. Here’s an itinerary that covers the must-see experiences for a day trip:

1. Drive to the Giant Forest
The Giant Forest is home to some of the largest and oldest trees on Earth, including the famous General Sherman Tree, which is the largest tree by volume. This is a must-see spot, and it’s located just a short drive from the park entrance. Take the time to walk the easy, 1-mile paved path around the tree to see it from different angles. The area has other giant sequoias as well, so be sure to walk around and enjoy the majestic surroundings.

2. Visit the General Grant Tree (Kings Canyon)
If time permits, drive down into Kings Canyon and visit the General Grant Tree, which is the second-largest sequoia in the world. The tree stands at 267 feet tall and is surrounded by a beautiful grove. The General Grant Tree Trail is an easy, 0.5-mile loop that offers great views of the tree and nearby sequoias. This spot is also known as the “Nation’s Christmas Tree,” so it's a special stop with a lot of history.

3. Scenic Drive through the Park
As you drive through Sequoia National Park, take time to enjoy the scenic vistas along the way. The park is known for its impressive mountainous landscapes, dense forests, and expansive views. If you’re driving towards the southern park entrance, consider taking the Moro Rock Road to visit Moro Rock (if open). The hike up to the rock provides panoramic views of the park and the Great Western Divide.

4. Stop at the Tunnel Log
On your way from Sequoia to Kings Canyon, you’ll pass by the Tunnel Log, which is a fallen sequoia tree that’s so large they actually carved a tunnel through it! It’s a quick stop and gives you the chance to see an enormous fallen tree up close. It’s a cool and unique spot that shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes to enjoy.

5. Visit the Foothills and Explore the Visitor Centers
The Foothills Visitor Center near the park’s southern entrance is a great spot to stop for a quick break, especially if you need restrooms or want to grab a map or ask a park ranger for recommendations. There’s also the Sequoia National Park Visitor Center near the Giant Forest that offers exhibits about the park’s ecology and history.

6. Optional: Scenic Views from the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway
If you have more time and are willing to drive a bit longer, take the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. It’s one of the most picturesque roads in California, winding through deep canyons and high cliffs, with plenty of spots to pull over and take photos. It takes you further into the park’s backcountry and offers incredible views, but be aware that it can take a little longer to drive due to its winding nature.

7. End your Day in Visalia
After spending the day in Sequoia and Kings Canyon, you’ll drive back down through the foothills toward Visalia. Visalia is a charming town and a perfect place to end your day, with good dining options and a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re hungry, try some local restaurants offering farm-to-table dining options, or take a stroll through the downtown area.

Other Considerations:
- Weather: June can be warm, so bring water, sunscreen, and wear comfortable clothing. The higher elevations of Sequoia will still be cool, even in summer, so a light jacket may be needed for morning hikes.

  • Check road conditions ahead of time as the park's higher elevations can still be impacted by snow or road closures in early summer.
  • If you plan on visiting the higher trails, ensure that they are accessible in mid-June, as some of the areas may still be snow-covered early in the season.

In Summary:
You can certainly experience the main highlights of Sequoia and Kings Canyon in a day, though it will be a full day. Focus on visiting the Giant Forest, General Grant Tree, and driving through some scenic routes. Take in the stunning landscapes, enjoy a few short hikes, and end your day in Visalia for a restful night. It’s a packed but beautiful itinerary!
