Day trips

Planning a trip later this year with friends. Probably around November. I have been reading about all the parks and drives to do around Vegas. We've been out there three times, but have only done the Strip (staying on Fremont this time). What place or places would you recommend we go see outside of Vegas? Would prefer 2 hour drive or less. We aren't big hikers, but might be interested in some hiking that is not too technical. Looking forward to responses!

Sounds like a fantastic trip! While Las Vegas is known for its vibrant Strip, there are so many natural wonders and cool spots to check out just a short drive away. Here are a few day trip recommendations from Las Vegas that are within a 2-hour drive, offering some great scenery and relaxing hikes (nothing too technical!)

  • Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (30 minutes from Las Vegas):

Red Rock Canyon offers stunning red rock formations and a variety of short, easy hikes that are perfect for a more relaxed day trip. The scenic loop drive is also beautiful if you'd prefer to stay in the car. Some of the hikes like the Calico Tanks Trail are moderate, but nothing too intense.

  • Valley of Fire State Park (1 hour from Las Vegas):

Valley of Fire is known for its bright red sandstone formations. You can drive through the park and stop for short hikes, like the Fire Wave or White Domes Trail, which are both relatively easy but offer amazing views and photo opportunities.

  • Lake Mead National Recreation Area (30 minutes from Las Vegas):

Lake Mead offers opportunities for relaxing by the water, picnicking, and short walks along the shore. If you're into water activities, you can rent kayaks or take a boat tour. There are a few easy trails if you'd like to stretch your legs while enjoying the views of the lake.

  • Hoover Dam (45 minutes from Las Vegas):

The Hoover Dam is a must-see if you've never visited. You can take a guided tour of the dam itself or just walk around and admire the incredible engineering feat. There are several viewpoints where you can get a great view of the dam and the surrounding area.

  • Mount Charleston (1 hour from Las Vegas):

For a bit of a cooler climate and some nature, head to Mount Charleston. There are easy hikes and picnic areas, and even if you’re not into hiking, the drive up to the mountain offers breathtaking views. The Mary Jane Falls trail is a bit more strenuous, but still manageable for most.

All of these spots offer beautiful landscapes and a chance to get out of the city without requiring anything too strenuous. Even if you're not keen on hiking, each location provides scenic drives and places to just relax and enjoy the outdoors. Have an amazing trip, and enjoy your time outside of the Vegas hustle!
