Safe place to stay?

Currently looking at accommodations for an overnight stay while visiting some of the Gem and Minerals shows.

How is the area around E. Broadway Blvd and S. Wilmot Road from a safety / sketchy perspective? (I appreciate that it may not be the closest location but I'm OK with that.)

The area around E. Broadway Blvd and S. Wilmot Road in Tucson is generally considered a mixed-use commercial and residential area. It is not the most upscale neighborhood, but it is not unusually dangerous either. Like many urban areas, safety can vary block by block, so general caution and common-sense precautions are recommended.

Safety and general environment:

  • The intersection is primarily commercial, with hotels, chain restaurants, and gas stations. Many visitors stay in this area for convenience, especially for events like the Gem and Mineral shows.
  • Property crimes such as car break-ins and petty theft can occur, especially around shopping areas or if valuables are left visible in vehicles.
  • Violent crime is relatively low in this specific area compared to some Tucson neighborhoods, but it’s always wise to stay in well-lit areas at night and lock doors.

Hotel and lodging considerations:

  • Choose a hotel that is well-reviewed and has good security measures (key card access, well-lit parking, visible staff).
  • Avoid hotels on the immediate edge of less populated side streets late at night, but the main roads like Broadway and Wilmot are generally fine.
  • Walking at night is generally safe along main streets, but it’s best to avoid wandering into side streets alone.

Other tips for safety:

  • Park in designated lots or garages rather than on the street when possible.
  • Keep personal belongings out of sight in cars and hotel rooms.
  • Check recent hotel reviews to see if there have been any safety concerns or issues reported by guests.

Overall, this area is a practical choice for visiting events like the Gem and Mineral shows. While not a luxury neighborhood, it is generally safe for travelers who use normal precautions and stick to the main streets and hotel areas.
