Best place in Florida for Mahi-Mahi-fishing in July?
Hello!
I am going to Florida with my family in July.
We would like to go on a fishingcharter to try to catch Mahi-Mahi (Dolphins).
We are staying on both the east coast and the west coast.
We have a car so we can go all the way from Port Canaveral all the way down to the keys for the chance if best possible fishing.
We are thinking about being out for a half day so would be nice to go from a port that is closest to the fishingground which I assume is the gulfstream? More fishing and less transportation.
Would be very thankful for any help we can get.
Best regards.
Anders
Mahi-Mahi, also called dolphin fish, are a popular target for offshore fishing in Florida, particularly in the summer months like July. They are typically found in warm waters near the Gulf Stream on the Atlantic side and around structure, reefs, and floating debris on both coasts. Since you want a half-day trip and the most fishing with minimal transit time, choosing a port close to where Mahi-Mahi are abundant is key.
Here’s a detailed overview for the best spots on both coasts:
- East Coast (Atlantic side): The Gulf Stream runs close to shore from Cape Canaveral (Port Canaveral) down to the Miami area, making it ideal for Mahi-Mahi. Out of Port Canaveral or Fort Pierce, you can reach prime offshore spots within 20–40 miles, which is good for a half-day charter. July is excellent timing because Mahi-Mahi are abundant in these warm waters, often found near floating Sargassum mats.
- Florida Keys (Atlantic/Gulf interface): Key West, Marathon, and Key Largo are excellent bases for targeting Mahi-Mahi. The Gulf Stream hugs the eastern side of the Keys, so charters leaving from Key West can reach productive grounds in 15–30 minutes. The Keys are known for consistently high Mahi-Mahi catches in July.
- West Coast (Gulf of Mexico side): Mahi-Mahi are less predictable on the Gulf side than on the Atlantic side, but they can be caught in the offshore waters near Sarasota, Tampa, and Naples. Charters from Sarasota or Fort Myers often target artificial reefs or floating debris fields where Mahi-Mahi may appear, but travel time to productive waters is usually longer compared to the Atlantic side.
Additional tips for maximizing your catch and enjoyment:
- Book a charter that specifically advertises Mahi-Mahi or offshore sportfishing. Ask if they target the Gulf Stream or floating debris for July.
- Half-day trips work best when the port is closest to the fishing grounds, so Key West and Port Canaveral are the best bets for your stated preferences.
- Bring sun protection and water; July is hot and the sun is strong. Also, some charters provide lunch or drinks, but check in advance.
- Fishing gear and bait are usually included, but confirm if the charter provides rods, tackle, and tackle suitable for Mahi-Mahi.
Recommendation: If your priority is catching Mahi-Mahi with minimal transit, focus on charters from Port Canaveral on the east coast and Key West or Marathon in the Keys. Both locations allow access to the Gulf Stream within 20–30 minutes, maximizing fishing time for a half-day trip.
