Anna Maria Island or another beach town in late January

Looking for a low key walkable town in a beach town that is not overly developed. I was thinking of Ana Maria island or do you suggest somewhere else. I want to be less than an hour from the airport and if possible, I prefer not to rent a car. I dont like places with big high rises on the beach. Thanks!

If you are looking for a low-key, walkable beach town in Florida that isn’t overly developed and doesn’t have big high rises, Anna Maria Island is one of the best choices, especially for late January when the weather is pleasant but not overly crowded. Its small-town charm, historic cottages, and calm beaches make it ideal for a relaxed, car-free stay.

Here’s a detailed look at Anna Maria Island and some alternative options:

  • Anna Maria Island:

    - Small and walkable, with boutiques, cafés, and restaurants within easy reach in Bradenton Beach and Holmes Beach. - No large high-rise hotels; mostly cottages and low-rise condos. - Beaches are calm and family-friendly, with plenty of natural areas. - Public transportation is limited, but the island is compact enough to walk or bike around. - Closest airport: Tampa International Airport (~1 hour drive), Sarasota-Bradenton Airport (~30–40 minutes).

  • Longboat Key:

    - Less commercialized and quieter than Anna Maria. - Walkable areas near St. Armands Circle with shops and restaurants. - Mostly low-rise resorts and homes. - Great for a more secluded, resort-style experience. - Close to Sarasota-Bradenton Airport (~30–40 minutes).

  • Lido Key / Siesta Key:

    - Siesta Key is more developed than Anna Maria but still offers low-rise accommodations and walkable village areas. - Famous for powdery white sand beaches. - Bicycle-friendly with options to explore shops and restaurants without a car. - About 40–50 minutes from Sarasota-Bradenton Airport.

  • Captiva Island / Sanibel Island:

    - More secluded and natural, excellent for walking, biking, and shelling. - Limited high-rise development. - Restaurants and small shops are clustered in a few villages. - Slightly farther from major airports: about 1 hour 15 minutes from Southwest Florida International (Fort Myers).

Tips for a car-free stay:

  • Book accommodations within walking distance of restaurants and shops. - For Anna Maria, consider staying in Bradenton Beach or Holmes Beach.
  • Use bicycles for longer distances; many islands have rental shops.
  • Public trolleys or shuttles exist on Anna Maria Island, Siesta Key, and Sanibel, which can help reduce the need for a car.
  • Late January is ideal weather-wise, but note that popular towns may have slightly higher visitor volume from snowbirds, so early booking is recommended.

Overall, Anna Maria Island checks almost all your boxes: low-rise, walkable, charming, and close enough to airports. Longboat Key and Siesta Key are great alternatives if you want slightly more amenities or quieter surroundings. Sanibel and Captiva are best if you don’t mind a slightly longer drive and want a more natural, peaceful experience.
