Alligators
Hello, we have a family trip planned to Pensacola in September. My 4 kids REALLY want to hold a baby alligator. I know there are places in/near Destin that you can hold one, but is there anywhere in Pensacola? After we do the 13 hour drive there, we don’t want to drive another hour to hold a baby alligator if we don’t have to! Thanks
Pensacola and the surrounding areas do offer opportunities to see and interact with alligators, including the chance to hold a baby alligator, though your options are a bit more limited than in Destin. Here’s a detailed overview for families looking to do this without traveling far after a long drive.
Options in or near Pensacola:
- Gulf Breeze Zoo / Alligator Exhibit: Located just across the bridge from Pensacola in Gulf Breeze, the zoo features live alligators. While the primary focus is viewing, they occasionally have interactive sessions or educational demonstrations where kids may safely touch or hold baby alligators under staff supervision. It’s worth calling ahead to confirm if hands-on experiences are available during your visit.
- Navarre Beach Alligator Experiences: Around 45–50 minutes east of Pensacola Beach, some eco-tour operators offer guided encounters with reptiles including baby alligators. These tend to be smaller, private experiences where children can safely hold a baby alligator.
- Local Nature Centers / Wildlife Exhibits: Some nearby wildlife centers in Escambia County offer “reptile programs” for school groups and families, which occasionally allow participants to hold baby alligators. Check with centers such as the Escambia County Extension Office for schedules and availability.
If you are willing to drive slightly further (around an hour to Destin), more specialized facilities exist with structured encounters focused entirely on baby alligators, such as Alligator Adventure in Destin or nearby animal parks, which guarantee a hands-on experience.
Tips for a safe and enjoyable experience:
- Always supervise children closely, and make sure the program staff handle the alligators properly.
- Call ahead to confirm age requirements and availability — some centers limit holding experiences to certain ages or during specific hours.
- Plan for travel and rest — after a 13-hour drive, you may want a destination where you can walk around and relax while still enjoying wildlife experiences.
In summary, while Pensacola itself has limited options for holding baby alligators, the Gulf Breeze Zoo and some nearby eco-tour operators provide convenient opportunities. For guaranteed hands-on experiences, a short drive east toward Destin may be worth considering, depending on your family’s energy and schedule.
