Universal Orlando

I have tried to look on the forum for this but just thought I would ask. We are a Disney family and had a great time in Florida last summer. We were thinking of going to universal this year but unsure if our kids are too young? My youngest is 5 and is a daredevil (ToT was her fav ride last year). She is currently 42inches tall and has another 6months before we go. I just wondered if there was as much to do at universal as there is at Disney for her age group in particular. Many thank in advance

Universal Orlando can be a great experience for kids, but it’s important to know that it is generally geared toward slightly older children and thrill-seekers compared to Disney. For your 5-year-old who is adventurous and currently 42 inches tall, there are options, but they will be more limited than at Disney, which has a wide variety of attractions for very young children.

Height Requirements & Age Considerations:

  • Many of Universal’s big thrill rides, like The Incredible Hulk Coaster, Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, and Harry Potter attractions, have height minimums well above 42 inches.
  • For your child’s height, rides like Flight of the Hippogriff, Seuss Landing rides at Islands of Adventure (like Cat in the Hat, Caro-Seuss-el), and some water play areas will be suitable.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has immersive experiences that are enjoyable for younger kids, but many rides there do have height restrictions (Dragon Challenge and Forbidden Journey, for example).

Kid-Friendly Areas & Activities:

  • Islands of Adventure – Seuss Landing: Perfect for children 5–8, with whimsical rides, interactive play, and bright, colorful surroundings.
  • Universal Studios – Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone: A smaller section with kid-appropriate rides and play areas.
  • Interactive Shows: Universal has several shows and character meet-and-greets that are suitable for younger children.

Tips:

  • Consider visiting both parks for only part of the day if your child may tire easily; Universal can be overwhelming with crowds and height requirements.
  • Use the Universal app to check real-time ride availability and height restrictions so you can plan rides your child can enjoy.
  • Bringing a stroller may be helpful even if your child is normally a good walker, since Universal parks are large and involve a lot of walking.

In summary, while Universal Orlando has kid-friendly options, a 5-year-old may not have as many ride choices as at Disney. However, if your child is daring and enjoys the few attractions that do fit her height, she can still have a fun and memorable visit.
