Planning a trip to SF in July or August.

Just curious which area(s) would be the best to stay, 2 adults, no kids? We will not be renting a car and will be using public transportation. I am thinking Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf? TIA

For a trip to San Francisco in July or August with two adults, no kids, and no car, choosing the right neighborhood to stay in is key for convenience, walkability, and access to public transportation.

Best Areas to Stay

  • Union Square:
    • Central location in downtown San Francisco with easy access to cable cars, Muni buses, and BART.
    • Walking distance to shopping, theaters, restaurants, and nightlife.
    • Good for those who want to explore the city without a car and enjoy a bustling urban environment.
    • Hotels range from luxury to mid-range, often with rooftop bars and convenient amenities.
  • Fisherman’s Wharf:
    • Tourist-friendly area along the waterfront with easy access to Pier 39, seafood restaurants, and boat tours including Alcatraz.
    • Somewhat farther from downtown and less convenient for public transportation to other neighborhoods.
    • Best if your focus is sightseeing around the waterfront and tourist attractions.
    • Hotels can be more expensive and tourist-heavy, but many offer views of the bay or ships.

Other Neighborhoods Worth Considering

  • Financial District / Embarcadero: Central, quiet at night, close to ferry terminals and BART for regional travel.
  • SoMa (South of Market): Modern hotels, near museums, nightlife, and some public transport lines; can be less scenic but convenient.
  • North Beach / Telegraph Hill: Charming neighborhoods with cafes and nightlife, walkable to Fisherman’s Wharf and cable cars, more residential feel.

Recommendation

If your priority is using public transportation and being in the heart of the city with plenty of dining and nightlife options, Union Square is generally the best choice. If your main focus is on waterfront sightseeing, seafood, and tourist attractions, Fisherman’s Wharf works, but you’ll be slightly farther from downtown conveniences.
