Train question

I've read that if you sit on one side you get great views and on the other side you just see the side of a mountain. How do you best insure that you're on the best side of the train? Is it fist come first serve? What side do we want? Thanks in advance for answers/suggestions.

The Leadville Scenic Train, part of the historic Colorado & Southern route, offers spectacular views of the Rockies, valleys, and mining towns. Choosing the right side of the train can significantly enhance your experience, but it requires some planning.

Here’s what you need to know about seating and views:

  • Seating is generally first-come, first-served unless you purchase premium tickets or reserve specific seats. Some tours allow seat assignments, but most standard tickets do not guarantee a particular side.
  • The “best” side for scenic views depends on the direction of travel. Typically, if you are traveling north from Leadville toward Climax or south toward Leadville, the east side offers more open views of the valleys and mountains. The west side often has mountains close by, which can block wider vistas.
  • Train cars may have large windows, so both sides can offer decent photo opportunities, but if your goal is panoramic shots of peaks, rivers, and townscapes, try to be on the east-facing side when heading north, or west-facing side when heading south.

Tips for securing a preferred side:

  • Arrive early at the station to claim the side you prefer. Boarding as soon as doors open increases your chances of getting prime seats.
  • Ask the train staff if there are recommended cars for scenic viewing; some cars are specifically oriented for photography and sightseeing.
  • Consider purchasing any upgraded or reserved seating options if available, especially during peak fall foliage season when trains are busier.
  • If possible, ride the train both directions. Some visitors choose to take the round trip and switch sides to capture both perspectives.

In summary, while much of seating is first-come, first-served, being strategic about arrival, understanding the direction of travel, and selecting cars with the best vantage points can help ensure you have the most scenic experience on the Leadville train.
