Washington DC Memorial Weekend

Hi, we are 66/64, good walking shape and have an itinerary I've researched that I'm pretty pleased with but could really use feed back on reasonable and safety. The one area that troubles me.

1. if we walk the monuments after dusk, ending at the Washington Monument, is it safe to walk back to our hotel, Hilton Washington Mall the Warf?

2. Wasn't thinking when planned dates; what to do ON Mem Day to avoid the Mall and crowds?

3. Suggestions for late afternoon/early evening day AFTER Mem Day.

Its been over 30 years since we've been to DC and really looking for ideas.

TIA!

Washington DC is generally safe for walking, especially around the National Mall, but there are a few considerations for after dark and for busy holiday weekends like Memorial Day.

1. Walking after dusk from the monuments back to Hilton Washington DC at The Wharf:

The route from the Washington Monument to The Wharf is approximately 1.5 miles. While the National Mall is well-lit around major monuments, some sections can feel isolated after dark. It’s generally safe for healthy adults, but taking precautions is wise.

  • Stick to well-lit main paths along the Mall and Constitution/Independence Avenues.
  • Consider walking in pairs or as a group rather than alone.
  • Alternatively, use a rideshare (Uber/Lyft) or taxi for a short ride back to your hotel for added safety and convenience, especially if tired after a long day.
  • Keep personal belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings.

2. Memorial Day considerations:

The National Mall will be extremely crowded on Memorial Day with parades, ceremonies, and visitors. If you want to avoid the crowds:

  • Plan a morning or late afternoon visit to smaller memorials such as the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, or the Jefferson Memorial around the Tidal Basin.
  • Consider visiting neighborhoods like Georgetown, Capitol Hill, or the National Zoo, which will be less congested.
  • Take advantage of boat rides along the Potomac River or guided neighborhood tours to explore DC away from the Mall.

3. Suggestions for late afternoon/early evening the day after Memorial Day:

  • Take a sunset walk along the Potomac River or the waterfront at The Wharf, which is lively and safe with dining options.
  • Enjoy a casual dinner in neighborhoods like Penn Quarter, Chinatown, or Adams Morgan, where outdoor seating and nightlife create a vibrant, safe environment.
  • Visit rooftop bars or restaurants for views of the city, which allows you to experience the cityscape without being in the crowded tourist areas.
  • Consider evening guided tours such as night-time monument tours or ghost/history walks for a unique perspective.

Overall, DC is quite walkable for people in good shape, but combining well-planned walking routes with occasional rideshare trips for nighttime or crowded periods will make your Memorial Day weekend safe and enjoyable.
