Beach questions

We’re debating on spending 1 day at the beach for the kids during our upcoming trip to Tahoe this summer.around the last week of July. I’ve read that Sandy Beach is highly recommended. But I’ve also read that this particular beach gets crowded and it’s best to arrive early and wait before they open. Is this true during the weekdays also? If this is the case. can anyone recommend any other beaches that are family friendly and have amenities like bathrooms, benches and kayak rentals. We’re going to be staying at Harrahs.

Spending a day at the beach in Lake Tahoe is a great idea, especially for families with kids, as the lake’s clear waters are perfect for swimming and water activities. Sandy Beach is indeed one of the most popular beaches on the south shore and is well-loved for its gentle sandy shoreline and scenic views. However, it is true that it can get crowded, particularly during the peak summer season around the last week of July.

Even on weekdays, Sandy Beach tends to fill up quickly, especially in the late morning and early afternoon. Arriving early, around 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., is recommended to secure a good spot. Waiting before they officially open isn’t usually necessary, but getting there early does help avoid the largest crowds and ensures you can park nearby.

If you prefer alternatives that are family-friendly and have amenities like bathrooms, benches, and kayak rentals, here are some good options near Harrah’s in South Lake Tahoe:

  • Kiva Beach: Smaller than Sandy Beach, quieter, and still has restrooms and picnic areas. Great for families looking for a more relaxed experience.
  • Bijou Community Park Beach: Includes playgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, and access to kayak rentals. The beach area is family-oriented and less crowded than Sandy Beach.
  • Pope Beach: Located slightly east along Highway 50, offers bathrooms, picnic tables, and rental options for paddleboards and kayaks. It’s scenic and usually less busy.
  • Zephyr Cove Beach: A bit further east but provides a full range of amenities including bathrooms, picnic areas, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and even a small café. Family-friendly and well-maintained.

Other tips for a summer beach day in Tahoe:

  • Bring plenty of sunscreen, hats, and water; the sun is strong even in the morning.
  • Arrive early to secure parking, especially for Sandy Beach, or consider alternate beaches if you want a less crowded experience.
  • Check the local beach rules—some beaches have a small parking fee or day-use fee.
  • Pack snacks or lunch if you prefer to avoid lines at beach concessions, especially at popular beaches.

Overall, while Sandy Beach is a classic choice, Kiva Beach, Bijou Community Park Beach, Pope Beach, or Zephyr Cove provide excellent family-friendly alternatives with amenities that make a day at the lake more relaxing and enjoyable.
