Which whale watching company with teens?

Hello!

We’re going to visit from Arizona on our spring break, beginning of March. Family of 4, kids are 14 and 11. We’ve been to San Diego often but never been whale watching. There are hundreds of companies to choose from, anyone have one they loved specifically with teens?

Thanks so much!

Whale watching in San Diego is a fantastic activity for families with teens, especially in early March when gray whales are migrating along the coast. San Diego has several reputable operators, and many cater well to families, providing educational commentary and sometimes extra amenities to keep teenagers engaged.

Some family-friendly whale watching companies worth considering:

  • Flagship Cruises & Events: One of the most popular operators in San Diego, offering large, comfortable boats with indoor seating and outdoor viewing decks. They provide knowledgeable naturalists on board who explain whale behavior, which can be educational and entertaining for teens.
  • Hornblower Cruises & Events: Offers slightly smaller vessels than Flagship but still family-friendly. They provide narrated tours, snack bars, and a lively atmosphere. Teens often enjoy spotting whales and dolphins from the top deck.
  • Old Town Trolley / San Diego Whale Watch: Offers a combo package with whale watching and other attractions, which can be convenient if you want to combine sightseeing with your cruise. The boats are mid-size and manageable for families.

Tips for enjoying whale watching with teens:

  • Dress in layers and bring a windbreaker; it can get chilly and windy on the water even in March.
  • Bring binoculars or rent them on board to enhance the experience of spotting whales, dolphins, and sea lions.
  • Consider booking a morning trip; the seas are generally calmer and wildlife activity can be higher.
  • Check for “family” or “educational” tours as these often have interactive commentary that keeps teens engaged.

Overall, Flagship Cruises and Hornblower are highly recommended for families with teens due to their comfortable vessels, knowledgeable staff, and overall family-friendly experience. Booking in advance is suggested, especially during spring break, as tours can sell out quickly.
