Do I need to reserve SUV in mid-September?
Hi,
Somehow my posts are not going through (3rd time posting)...
I'll be in Fairbanks in mid-September. I have a full-size car reserved (Camry or similar). Do I need to reserve an SUV instead? I'm staying in central Fairbanks and only driving to the Hot Springs and North Pole. Pickup and drop off are at the airport.
Many thanks for the tips!
For mid-September in Fairbanks, if your plans are limited to staying in central Fairbanks and driving to the Chena Hot Springs and North Pole, a full-size car like a Camry should be sufficient. Roads in that area are generally paved and well-maintained, and you won’t need an SUV for standard sightseeing routes.
However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind:
- Weather: September in Fairbanks can bring early snow or icy patches, especially at night or on less traveled roads. A vehicle with all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD) may provide extra peace of mind, but it’s not strictly necessary for the main roads you mentioned.
- Comfort and space: If you are traveling with multiple people or have lots of luggage, an SUV may be more comfortable, especially for longer drives like to Chena Hot Springs (about 60 miles one-way).
- Rental availability: Mid-September is slightly off-peak, so you are unlikely to face shortages, but confirming your reservation in advance is always recommended to ensure you get your preferred vehicle type.
If you plan to venture onto back roads, unpaved trails, or more remote areas beyond your current plan, then an SUV with AWD would be recommended. Otherwise, your full-size car reservation is suitable and cost-effective.
Summary recommendation:
- Full-size car is fine for central Fairbanks, Chena Hot Springs, and North Pole visits.
- Consider AWD or SUV only if you anticipate early snow, icy roads, or need extra cargo space.
- Reserve your vehicle in advance to ensure availability, but mid-September is typically not a high-demand period.
