I have been told that water quality is terrible south of San Diego. We don't plan on swimming in the ocean anyway, my question is, does it smell like crap hanging out on the beach? Is this crap washing up on the beach at high tide? One place we are considering is in this area and for a good rate. Should we completely rule it out?
The water quality south of San Diego, particularly near the border areas and Imperial Beach, has had issues historically with bacteria and occasional runoff, especially after rainstorms. However, if you do not plan on swimming, the water quality may not impact your visit significantly. The main concern for visitors staying on the beach is odor or visible debris.
Regarding smells and beach conditions:

In summary, if your plans do not include swimming, the potential water quality issues are unlikely to detract from a beachside stay. The odor and debris are generally minimal, and many visitors enjoy the beaches in this area without problems. A good rate in this location can make it a reasonable option for a relaxed, scenic beach visit.
