water quality

I have been told that water quality is terrible south of San Diego. We don't plan on swimming in the ocean anyway, my question is, does it smell like crap hanging out on the beach? Is this crap washing up on the beach at high tide? One place we are considering is in this area and for a good rate. Should we completely rule it out?

The water quality south of San Diego, particularly near the border areas and Imperial Beach, has had issues historically with bacteria and occasional runoff, especially after rainstorms. However, if you do not plan on swimming, the water quality may not impact your visit significantly. The main concern for visitors staying on the beach is odor or visible debris.

Regarding smells and beach conditions:

  • On most days, beaches south of San Diego do not have a strong unpleasant odor. You may notice a faint ocean smell, but it is typically not overwhelming or “crap-like.”
  • After heavy rains, the area can experience occasional sewage runoff, which can result in stronger odors or temporary closures. This is usually short-lived and monitored by local authorities.
  • High tides can bring in some seaweed or debris, but it is generally not significant, and beaches are maintained regularly. You may see some small debris on the sand, but it rarely affects the overall experience if you are not swimming.

If the rate for your accommodation is good and your primary goal is to enjoy the beach for walking, sunbathing, or relaxation without swimming, you don’t necessarily need to rule out the area. Here are some tips to minimize concerns:

  • Check local water quality and beach advisories online before your visit, especially if there has been recent rain.
  • Visit during lower tide times or midweek for fewer crowds and cleaner sand.
  • Stick to well-maintained public beaches, which are cleaned regularly by city crews.

In summary, if your plans do not include swimming, the potential water quality issues are unlikely to detract from a beachside stay. The odor and debris are generally minimal, and many visitors enjoy the beaches in this area without problems. A good rate in this location can make it a reasonable option for a relaxed, scenic beach visit.
