Stay at one , play at all
I had looked into a family trip to the keys a few years back but we ultimately picked a different destination. WAt that time I was interested in a set of resorts that offered exchange privileges- you could stay at one but had privileges to visit several others. I can no longer recall the names or figure it out via my research for a possible trip in near future. Would anyone know of a set of resorts that offered exchange privileges? Thanks
In the Florida Keys, there are a few resort groups and vacation ownership programs that historically offered “stay at one, play at all” privileges. This usually falls under the category of timeshare or vacation club memberships, where guests can stay at one property but have access to amenities or exchange privileges at sister resorts within the same network.
Popular options that may fit your description:
- Bluegreen Vacations: They operate multiple resorts in the Keys and throughout Florida. Members can often exchange weeks between resorts, subject to availability. Some Key West and Marathon properties participate.
- Marriott Vacation Club: While not exclusive to the Keys, they have properties in Florida where membership points can be used to stay at multiple resorts. Check for their Key Largo or Orlando-based offerings.
- Disney Vacation Club: While their resorts are primarily around Orlando, they do partner with other properties through exchange programs like RCI, which occasionally include Key resorts.
- RCI or Interval International-affiliated resorts: Many independent resorts in the Keys participate in these exchange programs, allowing you to trade your week at one resort for another, sometimes within the same geographic area.
Tips for planning:
- Check directly with the resort or vacation club to confirm current exchange privileges, as policies and participating resorts can change over time.
- Look for resorts in Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West that are part of a single network; this maximizes your ability to move between locations without additional bookings.
- If your goal is flexibility, consider booking through a points-based system (like Marriott or Bluegreen) rather than a traditional timeshare week, as it allows for more choices in both timing and location.
In short, Bluegreen Vacations, Marriott Vacation Club, and any resorts affiliated with RCI or Interval International are your best bets for a “stay at one, play at all” style family trip in the Keys. It’s worth contacting these programs directly to see which properties currently participate in exchange privileges and confirm availability for your planned dates.
