First time to area

This would be our first trip to the area. We would be traveling with 4 young adults (2 -21 year olds and 2-19 year olds)

We have been to Florida many times, but not this area. (Madeira and Destin)

Looking for somewhere with beachfront if possible, then also possibly close to marina.

Can you recommend restaurants must eats?

Things must dos and sees?

We are thinking flying into Miami (unless someone has a different suggestion)

I appreciate all feedback and suggestions in advance!!

Visiting the Florida Keys for the first time is exciting — it’s a unique blend of laid-back island vibes, beautiful beaches, boating, and incredible seafood. Flying into Miami is a solid choice, as it gives you the option to either spend a night in Miami before heading down the Keys or drive straight to Key Largo (about 1.5–2 hours) to begin your island adventure.

Accommodation suggestions:

  • Beachfront Resorts in Key Largo: The Key Largo Bay Marriott or Baker’s Cay Resort offer direct beach access and are close to marinas if you want to book boat trips or snorkeling excursions.
  • Islamorada: Cheeca Lodge & Spa or Islander Resort are excellent beachfront options with nearby marinas.
  • Key West: For a mix of beach, nightlife, and marina access, consider The Reach Key West or Casa Marina Key West. Key West has a more vibrant scene for young adults.

Restaurants & must-eat food:

  • Conch fritters & seafood: Hit local spots like Lorelei in Islamorada or Hogfish Bar & Grill on Stock Island for fresh catches.
  • Key Lime Pie: Don’t miss Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe for a classic dessert.
  • Casual waterfront dining: Bayside Grille, Lazy Days Restaurant (Islamorada), or Schooner Wharf Bar (Key West) for a fun, relaxed atmosphere with fresh seafood and drinks.
  • Breakfast / Brunch: Blue Heaven in Key West is iconic for its outdoor seating and lively vibe.

Things to do and see:

  • Snorkeling & Diving: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo offers glass-bottom boats and snorkeling tours to explore the coral reef.
  • Water Sports & Boating: Rent a kayak, paddleboard, or boat from local marinas. Some places offer eco-tours and dolphin watching.
  • Scenic Drive: Drive the Overseas Highway (US-1) for stunning views and photo stops along the way. Stop at Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada to feed tarpon.
  • Key West Activities: Duval Street for shopping and nightlife, Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square, Hemingway House, and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park for snorkeling and beach time.
  • Fishing Charters: Many marinas offer half-day or full-day trips — fun for young adults and beginners alike.

Tips:

  • Book accommodations early, especially if you want beachfront property.
  • Consider splitting time between a quieter middle Keys location (Key Largo / Islamorada) and Key West for nightlife and culture.
  • Plan for a relaxed pace — the Keys are meant for enjoying the ocean, the sunsets, and local food without rushing.

Overall, your group will have plenty of opportunities for both active water sports and relaxing beach/marina experiences while enjoying the fantastic food and island atmosphere.
