Westin vs Whaler
Hello. We usually stay at the Whaler but are considering staying at the Westin on Kaanapali beach. We really like this area of Kaanapali. Do you think the Westin is worth making the switch? Is the beach eroded or less usable in front of the Westin? I think I remember it was narrower with a large dip before the water? Thanks.
The decision between staying at the Whaler or the Westin on Kaanapali Beach depends on what you value most in your stay—beach access, resort amenities, or room options. Both properties are well-regarded, but there are some differences that may influence your choice.
Regarding the beach in front of the Westin:
- The beach in front of the Westin is slightly narrower than in front of the Whaler due to seasonal erosion. At times, there may be a noticeable dip or slope before the water, but it is generally safe and usable for swimming, sunbathing, and other typical beach activities.
- The sand quality is good, soft, and clean, though certain tides or weather patterns can temporarily make the shoreline steeper or reduce beach width.
- For families or guests wanting calm water, the Westin section is generally fine, but those seeking very wide stretches of sand for beach games might prefer areas further north or closer to the Whaler.
Other considerations when comparing the resorts:
- Westin Maui Resort & Spa:
- Offers multiple pools, including a large lagoon-style pool and a children’s pool.
- Variety of restaurants and bars on site, plus spa services.
- Direct access to Whalers Village for shopping and dining, just a short walk north along the beach.
- Recently renovated rooms and suites with modern amenities.
- The Whaler:
- Condo-style units with full kitchens, which is convenient for longer stays or families who prefer to cook.
- Good-sized beach frontage with easy access for swimming and snorkeling.
- Walking distance to Whalers Village and Kaanapali Beach activities.
- More of a residential feel, often quieter than the larger resort-style Westin.
In summary, the Westin is worth considering if you enjoy resort-style amenities, multiple pools, and spa services, and don’t mind a slightly narrower beach with a small dip near the water. If your priority is condo-style accommodations, a more expansive and consistent beach frontage, or a quieter atmosphere, sticking with the Whaler might be preferable. Both options provide excellent access to Kaanapali Beach and Whalers Village, making either a solid choice depending on your preferences.
