Third street area

Hi, we are heading to Santa Monica in May a d I've heard that Third street shopping area shops are nearly all closed and that the area is unsafe! Is this the case? Also are the malls ok to go to? We have been before but now I'm worried that it's not the same anymore. Has anyone been lately that can tell me what to expect.

Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade remains a popular tourist destination, but it has experienced some changes over the last few years. While it hasn’t been abandoned or completely closed, you may notice a mix of open shops, vacant storefronts, and some businesses that have shifted to online operations or relocated. Overall, the area is still active with street performers, restaurants, and pedestrian traffic.

Regarding safety, Santa Monica is generally safe during the day, but like many urban areas, you should remain aware of your surroundings, especially in less crowded areas or at night. The city has visible police presence, and the promenade is a pedestrian-only zone, which reduces typical street traffic hazards. Petty theft can occur, so keep belongings secure.

  • Many chain and boutique stores are open on Third Street, along with restaurants and cafes.
  • Some storefronts may be temporarily vacant, but the area is not “deserted” and still has plenty to see and do.
  • Street performers and small kiosks continue to attract visitors, maintaining a lively atmosphere.

As for malls, Santa Monica Place, located at the north end of the Promenade, is a modern, enclosed mall and generally very safe. It has a mix of high-end and mid-range retailers, several dining options, and security personnel. Indoor malls are a good alternative if you want to avoid any uncertainty about street-level activity.

  • Santa Monica Place is fully operational and a good destination for shopping, dining, and indoor activities.
  • Nearby smaller malls or shopping centers along Wilshire Boulevard or Montana Avenue offer quieter and safe shopping experiences.
  • Parking is generally easy at malls compared to the street promenade, especially if you prefer minimal walking with children or elderly family members.

In summary, while Third Street Promenade has seen some vacancies, it remains a lively area with plenty of open shops, restaurants, and street activity. Malls like Santa Monica Place provide a safe and fully functioning shopping alternative. Daytime visits are the best for a positive experience, and standard precautions for personal belongings are advised.
