Third street shops and malls.

I am seeing on you tube that Third street shops and Santa Monica malls are half empty! Does anyone know this to be true?

Third Street Promenade and the nearby Santa Monica malls have gone through a period of transition over the past few years, similar to many urban shopping districts. While YouTube videos may give the impression of half-empty spaces, the reality is a bit more nuanced.

Some factors affecting the shopping areas include:

  • Several national retailers have closed or relocated, leaving vacant storefronts temporarily.
  • The rise of online shopping has impacted foot traffic, especially for large chain stores.
  • Economic fluctuations and rent increases have made it challenging for small businesses to maintain a presence.

However, it’s not entirely empty:

  • Many popular stores, boutique shops, and restaurants remain open, especially around the main promenade.
  • Seasonal events, street performances, and weekend crowds can make the area feel lively.
  • The nearby malls and shopping centers are still home to anchor stores and a variety of dining and entertainment options.

In general, while there may be some empty storefronts, Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica malls are still worth visiting for shopping, dining, and people-watching. Timing your visit for late mornings or afternoons, especially on weekends, tends to show the area at its liveliest.
